Default Wife's birthday cake is out to get me!!!

Weird day....

Missed lunch and most of my veggie carbs right along with it. By the time I got to eat something, it was about an hour till dinner, so I just had a few pickle rolls to hold me over.

So I'm putting the chicken in the oven and washing some asparagus, and MIL calls to find out what time is dinner... and to say she baked the cake.

Without warning, I caught myself trying to rationalize having a piece of that cake.

Now... I haven't had any cravings for forbidden food since about day three.... but here I am trying to talk myself into eating cake. How stupid is that? I'm wondering if my lack of timely eating and keeping my carbs up today might have been a factor.

Anyway... I've managed to avoid the cake, so far, by excusing myself from the proceedings immediately after dinner... before anyone even started talking about that damned cake. Of course that means I also missed my wife opening her presents and the weekly Scrabble showdown.

So now I'm sequestered in my computer room with the door shut tight, trying to ignore the voice in my head that keeps saying, "I'll bet that's a chocolate cake sitting out there."

Well, it's not just "any" cake, it's a birthday cake!! For some reason, those are more difficult to resist!! My b-day was last month. My grandparents were the only family in town and they forgot about it....it's one day after their wedding anniversary too! BUT they're in their 80's and forgetting what day it is, is becoming a common thing. I spent one night a couple days after my birthday on the phone with Grandmother. She was calling to apologize for forgetting. I told her no problem, I'd lost X amount of pounds and didn't need the temptation of a cake or a party. Remember what I said about forgetful. The grandparents caught me the next day right before I was leaving for lunch at work. They brought me a whole sheet cake straight from the bakery!! My friend at work recognized the inward battle on my face! How could they??? Well, they did. I took the cake home and put it in the fridge and resisted it daily for many days until my 13 yr old FINALLY polished off all of it by himself.

Resist! It's not worth it, I promise. Imagine the crash and burn of carb overload after you swallow it. Imagine the sugar nap you won't be able to resist. Imagine sleeping for HOURS after that binge. Imagine the cramping that's going to go on inside you. Imagine the horrendous effects it's going to have on you involving your toilet. Imagine the stall that could very possibly last 2 weeks. Oh, yeah, imagine all those cravings you're going to have to go through all over again because ONCE just wasn't enough! Imagine the guilt and self sabotage feelings you won't be able to shake off because you knew better and didn't do better.... Imagine the birthday present you're giving your wife by giving her a healthier you!

THERE, feel better about your SMART decision to resist now! Stay in that room! It's safe in there! Good luck, my friend!!

I like the way you write!

Birthday cakes (anybody's) and popcorn at the movies were always my downfall. Now I know, if I have that cake, that's it, I'm off the diet and all of my hard work the past 2 months will have been for nothing... Now getting that cake out of my brain let alone keeping it out of my stomach is even a more difficult thing... because you can stop yourself from putting something in your mouth, but it's super hard to stop thoughts from popping up in your head...

So I usually think... 'I want the cake, but I can't have it' just as if I was an alcoholic, a drug addict, or a diabetic, ... I CAN'T have it! So boo hoo, pout and wish I was tall and skinny with a fast metabolism, but I'm not, so I CAN'T have it! It's easier for me then, because I can't go out and buy a convertible mini cooper either, so it's not like I have to have everything I want the second I want it...

Even if you are still thinking about that cake next week... you can't have it!

I love birthday cakes and the icing especially...I sympathize with you...it has to be awful...just remember if you did succumb then you might not feel all that great and I am talking about your tummy..,
Oh btw...I do think you going without food was some of this problem...not all, though.

I think you have hit the nail on the head here Forrest

Well done for recognising a possible trigger situation and dealing with it.

If it makes you feel any better, I'm just a browser here, and I'm on a low-fat diet. Technically, I *can* have sweets, cake, buttered popcorn - just be extra careful to watch the calorie count and fat. Of course, I can only eat little bits of food here and there and I'm constantly hungry. And because the cake and popcorn insanely drive up the calories and fat, I can't do more than taste them. Like giving a sip of water to a man lost and wandering in the desert.

So don't feel too bad that you can't have these things. I can't, either.

I guess I have it easier, I was raised jehovahs witness till I was about 10 or so, so I have no embedded mindset of "oooooo birthday cake" because well, i've never had one. well I take that back, my dad bought me a cheesecake for my 22nd birthday but I was so sick with strep throat i couldn't eat it. I think because I never ate birthday cake or made a big deal about birthdays, I really just don't like cake at all. Of course, that didn't save me last weekend when my boyfriend had his birthday... He doesn't like cake either so he gets a MASSIVE cookie cake... and yeah I like those! lol I resisted it by eating my fajita steak salad while everyone else ate cookie, and just avoided looking at it. "BAD kibs, No Cookie!" seems to be my mantra.

And it works, because I avoided that cookie cake on sunday and i'm 2.4lbs down since then.

I heard this on another Atkins board, but I adopted it into my own way of thinking: I don't say "I can't have that," I say "I don't want that," because I'm an adult and can have whatever I like, BUT I don't want to be 270 pounds again. I don't want to be the fat girl in my group of friends. I don't want to have to shop in the plus-size department, and so on. Just remember you made a decision 2 months ago that you don't want the consequences of that action.

I agree with Pagliaccia -- there is nothing saying I CAN'T HAVE a certain food - B U T --- I made a conscience decision to gain back my health so I C H O O S E NOT to eat certain foods that caused me problems.

I am also a Type 2 diabetic, so the fact that I don't eat sweets doesn't bother me near as much as it did before I was diagnosed...sweets actually don't even smell good to me anymore.

You read where people have a cheat day then they spend the next day in the bathroom with terrible cramping and diarreah -- cake = diarreah --- not something I want to do tomorrow, so today I C H O O S E to stay away from cake.
