| Dr. ATkins wrote that exercise is "non-negotiable" during his diet. You should begin on Day 1. I think alot of folks believe that they need to run 2 miles and work out for 3 hours at the gym and if they can't do those things on Day 1, they wait until they can. Not so, Dr. Atkins has a section in the book of exercise/activities that burn 100 calories or so. Walking around the block is exercise. Walking up and down stairs is exercise. Mowing the lawn is exercise. Any activity above your normal level is considered exercise, so there is no excuse not to exercise beginning on Day 1. Even if you are in a wheelchair or confined to bed, you can do stretches for those body parts that aren't immobilized.

| You do something from the very first day. There is no reason or excuse to wait. If you are very overweight and have not been exercising, then something that does not damage your legs and knees until you get some of the weight off. You can exercise in a chair. That's how I started. You can exercise lying on your bed. Every time you life a leg, it works your abs and core. You can lift light weights sitting in a chair. All of this might not seem like much, but will jump start muscle strengthening and fat burning. Recumbent steppers and bikes take the strain off the legs and knees, but give you a real workout. It will increase your energy, too. You will feel more energetic after your first workout. Any time you are out of shape, you should start slowly and build up to more strenuous exercise. You will burn as many calories with the light exercise as a fit person will burn with strenuous exercise in the same amount of time. Getting an out-of-shape body exercised takes work and a lot of energy, which it will get from fat stores. After you are in better shape, then you start higher intensity cardio and weight bearing exercise.

| I agree - start day 1. Walk to the corner, or around the block, but DO SOMETHING.

| I agree with everyone but that being said it was not like I myself started on day one. Oh no - I was stubborn enough not to even though the people on this board kept prodding with the "are you exercising" question.

| I have been on more diets than you can shack a stick at. I always seem to lose some weight and then bulk back up. After examining my past there is one common thread, I did not exercise consistently or at all. Fast forward to a year ago... I started eating healthy (non Atkins) and working out twice a week at home. I went from 270 to 240. Then I added in the gym and decided to go 3 times a week. I dropped to 230 (I stalled a little here). Since then (the last 3 months) my wife and I moved, so I stopped working out, diet has been crazy, and whatever else can go wrong did. However, I only gained 5 pounds. Any other time I would have already been at the weight I was and then some. So I think that by being consistent with working out I built up a buffer. my muscle was burning most of the bad stuff I was taking in. My problem is I still have 45 pounds to go and I know my muscle wont last unless I get my diet back under control (why im here) and exercise. So to answer your question, today is my first day and I am going to work out after this post. Ps. I am one of those people who decided I would go to the gym after I met a certain weight because of insecurities. I am glad I forced myself to go for a few weeks because it turns from a chore to a craving that causing me to feel good about myself. I am almost never insecure at the gym anymore. For those days I cannot go to the gym I am buying EA Active for my Wii. From the looks of it it would be a fun way to get some exercise in while under the guise of play. Sorry for the book Steve |

| My view of exercise on Atkins is: You are using your fat for energy. Therefore more energy used = more fat burned. IMHO of course.

| I started on the first day of Induction (currently on day 7). Some days I have to push myself to get started exercising, but even if I just do 15 minutes of a exercise dvd or 15 minutes on my elliptical I try to get something in. I just think to myself (when I'm all out of breath lol) I'm burning fat so keep going! Most of the time I find that once I get started I enjoy it and want to keep exercising!

| I agree, the hardest thing about exercise is getting off your duff, I walk for exercise, and once I start I like it, it is just the thought of getting started that holds me back sometimes. ![]() ![]() |
