Default Funny how we notice the price of 'good' food

And (at least for me) don't pay attention to the cost of 'snacks' or 'treats.'

Sitting here eating Fage, which I almost didn't buy, as it is over $2 per serving... but then I realized, I use to drop $2 a day for donut holes and think nothing of it. (And felt like crud of course.. whereas I will feel awesome now...)

I agree!!! We just spent a ton of money on HEALTHY food today, no junk! Before, we would have spent all that money on CRAP and felt ok about it... your right, you feel like the crap you eat. Eating THIS way really makes you feel better!

I catch myself being disgusted by the price of healthy food too! Then I remember the Sonic breakfast at over $5 per day, the $5 or $6 I'd spend in the vending machine at work throughout the day and the any ole time pickin up Chinese or fast food! HA!! No more! I don't mind splurging now and then. In place of all of those yucky old habits, I can now treat myself to an occasional steak, shrimp and a variety of fresh produce. You do tend to get better at spotting deals and sometimes shopping at more than one place to get everything you need to make your WOE successful. I'm getting better about it all the time!

I had a similar thought today when reviewing bank statements. Since I've been on this WOE since 3/17, I've gone to the ATM machine TWICE in 2 months. I've been cooking at home and packing my own lunch and obviously eating no fast food. I would normally take $40 out once or twice a week, primarily for lunches and quick dinners.

Well... I'm not paying $2 for one red or yellow bell pepper... no matter how good they might be for me.

I never devoted much income to "junk" food.... maybe an occasional bag of cookies or a tub of ice cream for the wife and I to share while watching a movie.

So our food bill going up is due to buying more meat rather than a bag of rice or a bag of potatoes.

I'm hoping to offset the cost of eating today with how much less I better be eating at 200 rather than 300 pounds.

I stretch my grocery dollar by using couponmom. I'll review the deals in my area and make a short list for each store based on what might interest me. You just read through the master list and check boxes to make your own list - you don't have to write it down or anything. It also helps brainstorming and the endless "what should I make for dinner" question. I've been spending a lot less on LC than before, mostly because I eat out much less and cook big batches for leftovers.

Yep lol...I sent my dh to get me a spaghetti squash the other day and almost told him not to get it when he called and said they were right at $2 a pound and the smallest one he could find was 3.5 pounds. I told him to get it though...I guess he was telling the truth or he could have been pulling my leg..dunno =) lol

Anyhow, in the past I would have never second thought a large combo from McD's that would have cost around the same thing.

I have actually been spending much less and have much more money at the end of the month. I used to buy fast food daily and over 5 chocolate bars for myself and other chocolate for the kids too.

Im happy to be able to have money left over to spend on other things.

When people say they can't afford to do Atkins at the price of meat and veggies, I always think of the price of the big bags of chips, Doritoes and the cans of soda. How many people sit down with a bag of chips and eat the whole thing while watching TV? A big bag of chips costs as much as a nice steak. Eating out at a fast food joint costs as much or more than eating a healthy Atkins meal with high quality protein.

My appetite is controlled, so I don't need to eat as much. Switching over might be a little expensive, but in the long run the grocery bill will be less.

And feeling better about yourself because you've lost XXX pounds can't really carry a price tag.

Not to mention money saved that you don't even realize because you never needed to go to the hospital to treat a weight-related problem that you prevented because you got down to a healthy weight before that ever had to happen.
