Exclamation Sausage, Bacon & the likes....

Those of you that eat things like sausage, bacon, pepperoni and summer sausage... WHAT brands are you using?

I am on the hunt for SUGAR FREE, CARB FREE & Nitrate (Nitrite) FREE products.. if they even exist!

We are using:

Plumrose bacon, its got NO sugar and NO carb! It took us forever and 3 stores to find NON SUGAR bacon... but its got Nitrates!

I was using Bridgford summer sausage, its got SUGAR! Probably Nitrates too...

I was also using Bob Evans sausage patties, but of course MORE SUGAR! No Nitrates though...

We also use Armor pepperoni, but they have SUGAR & Nitrates!!!!!!!!

So, if anyone knows of good "healthy" brands of these... please let me know!!

Default Re: Sausage, Bacon & the likes....

I was about to embark on that same quest when I started in March, but the sodium content in all those foods didn't agree with me. So, I don't eat bacon, pepperoni or sausage. I've replaced them with uncured turkey and low-sodium hams, both with no sugar. I've lost my craving for sweet and salty (thank goodness). If I didn't stop eating the high-salt stuff, I'm not sure I would have broken that cycle.

I know this isn't helpful to your question ( ) but I wanted to share my experience about how moving away from those processed, high-sodium foods, kind of solved my cravings for them.

Good idea for a thread though, as folks are often looking for the same things you asked about.

I would like to move away from processed foods as well, but I feel like I am already on a big complicated mission trying to figure this all out... so throwing that all in may be more confusing? I don't know...

What are you buying, where can you get it? Thanks!

BTW ... you lost all of that weight since March?!!! WOW! Congrats!

Evaporated cane juice is a healthy alternative to refined sugar. While both sweetners are made from sugar cane, evaporated cane juice does not undergo the same degree of processing that refined sugar does. Therefore, unlike refined sugar, it retains more of the nutrients found in sugar cane. Cane juice is available throughout the year.
Sugar with 0.00000000000000001% vitamins, haha.

My two cents: The amount of sugar in a piece of bacon is MINISCULE compared to what I used to eat (pizzas, candy bars, cokes, etc). Only eating a couple pieces a day, I think this is ok for my Atkins journey.

I buy whatever brand's on (ahem) "sale" at Whole Foods. And by "sale" I mean marked down a little bit from their ridiculous prices. I pay the extra because my son also eats the same stuff for his lunch, and I'll spend the extra for him for the peace of mind. I can't remember the brand. Oh, and Whole Foods also makes their own medium rare roast beef with garlic, salt, and pepper which I've been eating every day for my 10am snack. Boar's Head makes an uncured line, but my Stop and Shop and Shaw's didn't carry it.

Yes, down over 40 lbs since St. Patrick's Day. Not a single cheat and have been exercising 6x a week. Ironically, my ability to quickly lose weight was one of the reasons why I ballooned up to 240 ("I can lose weight quickly, so on XXXX date, I'll start.") I now know that this time has to be for real because as I am 36 yrs old now, the "next" time might be substantially more difficult. Finally, guys are a lot different than women when it comes to weight loss. I really do feel for women on this board who do everything right and either don't lose or lose slowly. I admire the stick-to-it-iveness of those who can go 4 weeks and not lose, but keep plugging away. That actually motivates me more than guys who drop 30lbs in the first month.
