Default Too much fat in breakfast shake?

I've been making a raw egg shake for breakfast every morning (thanks to the poster of the eggnog shake recipe for the great idea! ) . I've been adding flax seed and coconut oil in to get some good fats that I don't think I can hide in anywhere else. I started looking at numbers today and it looks like with everything I put in (a couple tbsp cream, 2 scoops protein powder, 1 Tblsp cocoa powder, 1/2 tblsp flax, 1 tblsp coconut oil, and 3 eggs) I'm pushing like 40 grams of fat and I'm guesstimating ~ 6 grams of carbs. Does that seem like too much for breakfast/1 meal alone?

Thanks!

Why are you counting/concerned about fat grams?

I'm not too concerned about the amount of fat, but I do feel a little nauseous after drinking it and am wondering if it is from the large amount of fat. I'm just wondering if it is detrimental to have a big chunk of fat at once vs trying to spread the fat out evenly over the day. I eat at least a little bit of fat with every meal/snack. I think I eat the most fat at breakfast and dinner. I would like to keep drinking these shakes every morning since they are really tasty and help me get a lot of protein. Just wondering if I should try to cut a little bit of fat out...maybe one less egg, less coconut oil...just looking for opinions.

Thanks

Could be. Maybe try omitting the coconut oil and see what happens? I would think coconut oil mixed with egg could be an issue on the gastrointestinal side of things.

If your body is not used to the coconut oil, it could be yeast die off from the coconut oil that is causing the nausea.........

Coconut oil should be introduced in small quantities and build up to the 3 tbsp per day for the recommended dose............

I've been making the shake with something called "Better'nEggs" (like Eggbeaters, but without the garlic, onion, etc. in it). It is mostly egg whites, so the fat content is quite a bit lower. Yes, I know that there is nutrition in the egg yolks, but with the cream added to the shake there is more than enough fat in it to keep the percentages in line. I have to watch calories, so I like the lower number of calories, too. When I made the shake with 3 raw eggs, the eggs contributed 240 calories. When I use 1 cup of the Better'nEggs (which says is equivalent to 4 eggs), the "eggs" contribute 120 calories.

If you decide to use something like Eggbeaters, make sure to read the ingredients. Eggbeaters had an "Original" version and a "Southwestern" version. I assumed that since the Southwestern version had some extra seasonings in it, that the Original would be plain. Checked the ingredients, and nope, it had some seasonings in it, too (just less). I didn't want seasonings in my shake , so I opted for the Better'nEggs. It does contain 1 carb per 1/4 cup (equivalent to one egg), but it is worth it to me. Eggs contain .6g carbs per egg anyway, so the extra .4g per egg was worth it to me.

Try having some vegetables with it! It's a good idea to try to have some protein, fat and carbs in every meal if you can. Then at the end of the day have your ratios in accordance with the phase/rung you are at.

Your stomach should thank you.....

I would actually worry about too much protien. I use just enough protien powder to sweeten it, maybe 1/2 scoop. My protein powder has 24 grams of protien per scoop. I actually think the whole, fresh eggs are worth the extra calories. I generally do 2 eggs but a few times I decided to try 3 and I noticed no difference in how I felt or how full I stayed so I just stick to 2.
Somebody mentioned veggies. Have you tried adding fresh spinach to an egg cream? If you have a magic bullet or a blender I swear you won't taste it at all. It'll turn your shake green but as long as you blend it up real well you won't be able to taste it. I do it every morning and it makes me feel good that I'm getting veggies first thing in the morning.

A couple of things -

First, the thought of veggies in my eggnog shake makes me want to gag! I put cream, sugar-free vanilla extract, splenda, 1 teaspoon of instant decaf coffee, unsweetened cocoa powder, and ice in with my "eggs" to make a Mocha Frappacino type shake. Call me crazy, but I don't think the spinach would be a very good addition.

Second, I MUST watch calories at this stage of the game. You can get away with a lot more calories at a higher weight. By the time I reached Maintenance at 125 pounds, I found that I couldn't get away with eating the amount of calories I did at 215.

I'm glad I found your post. I tried making the eggnog shake with Egg Beaters and I was like "YUCK". Never thought about even the slightest bit of seasoning. I will have to look for Bettern'Eggs when I go grocery shopping next week
