Default Re: Has anyone tried Atkins and Alli (Orlistat) together?

hi Slidesdownmountains

i didnt read all 5 pages that well but heres my opinion on what would help

the Rungs are to find peoples OWL i could only go up to Rung 2 and 25 net carbs a day in order to still lose weight i could never eat berries or nuts while still loseing weight they would cause me to stall so try going back down the Rungs to help weight loss

and what ever you do dont take Alli there are FAR better ways to lose weight than some unnatural drug

try doing these things to help with your weight loss they help alot

1. go to the gym everyday for 2 hours and work on targeted muscle groups try through out the week to work all your muscles i was stalled after lossing 100 pounds of fat but then i whent to the gym and must have lost another 40 pounds of fat and gained 40 pounds of muscle

2. cardio is not the same as full body muscle work outs cardio is good but you need full body muscle work outs if you ever want to go further

3. about 10% of fat can be converted to glucose and 57% of protein can be converted to glucose in other words fat is the BEST thing you can eat for weight loss ofcourse you still need to eat protein in order to survive but eating 75-80% fat 20% protein 3% carbs is fine if you cant lose with 65% fat 30% protein 3-5% carbs

anyways what i really think will help is stop takeing drugs and go to rung 1 or 2 and 20-25 net carbs a day eat super high fat , medium protein and 2 or more hours a day working out at a gym and through out the week make sure you work every muscle on your body it helps ALOT with fat loss but you will gain muscle at the same rate as fat loss so you need to know that and you will look ALOT better

and as for cardio 1 or 2 times a week on 2 differnt cardio exercise machines at the gym like a steping one and a bike one and make sure you only do it for 7 too 10 mins max and on as high resistance as you can go

remember doing short but intense and hard work outs like weight lifting or a 7 min cardio on max resistance drain the glucose from your muscles then the glucose you do eat gets sucked up by your muscles so you lose fat FAR better in most cases

and the reason you stay at the gym for 2 hours a day though is alot of resting inbetween sets and to think and be ready to properly work out the targeted muscle its hard to learn how to work out properly and to do a full body muscle work out over a weeks time so you will need someone to help you

edit: oh and dont eat aspartame its a known staller mostly all diet soda drinks have aspartame

Hi Ziggy - thanks for your response, some very helpful tips there.

2 queries:
1) how on EARTH do you find time to go to the gym for 2 hours EVERYDAY??! Lol
I don't belong to a gym because I prefer other forms of exercise: gymnastics, free-running, yoga, pilates, snowboarding, pole-dancing etc. I leave for the commute to work at 6.30a.m. and am not back at my house until 6.30p.m, though I try to walk throughout my lunch break and to and from the train station (there are no shower facilities where I work, so anything more strenuous would get pretty whiffy quickly!). What with making dinner, spending a little time with the BF, going to and from classes, showering/drying hair, housework etc - I really don't know where the extra time would come from!

2) Don't you need a day or two where you don't do any strenuous exercise, so your body can rest?

Controversial isn't the best word for it. It's more puzzling because Alli lowers fat absorption and is more suitable as an aid in low fat diets. Atkins is a high fat diet and depends on that high fat intake to fuel ketosis/lipolysis. So taking something that lowers fat while on a diet that depends on high fat intake is contradictory.

Anyhow, I re-read your posts and it looks like you were eating more fat than necessary. 164 grams of fat is the equivalent of eating about 1/2 pound of butter. That amount also yields 1475 calories. So you were essentially eating a 1500 calorie diet---from your fat intake alone.

Based upon that and based upon your eating-in-case-you-got-hungry habit, you did overeat. As Dr. ATkins wrote in the book, you do not have a license to gorge---and eating an equivalent of 1/2 pound of butter daily is gorging. Frankly, I don't know how you managed to avoid or ignore the appetite suppression of ketosis with that amount of fat in your diet.

Rather than using a medication to lower your fat absorption, you could have done it in a non-pharmacologic way, by simply lowering the amount of fat you were eating, like eating the equivalent of 4 tablespoons of butter rather than 1/2 pound.

When you moved to OWL Phase and stopped losing weight at 70 net carbs daily, you probably found your CCLL. It's absolutely NORMAL to stop losing weight when you exceed your CCLL. And it's absolutely NORMAL to have a CCLL. It's not a cause for panic. It's a cause for celebration, because you have found how many carbs you can eat and still lose weight.

Just be aware that we give advice on ADBB is based on Atkins, specifically the 2002 ed. That information may or may not apply to your modified low carb diet. In fact, it might hurt you rather than help you. We've had people here who follow the 1972 diet come away very disappointed because the 2002 diet advice we give doesn't work for them.

i got lots of free time thats why i can go for 2 hours every day xD gyms are good cause you can target your muscles theres machines and weights and etc so you can work every muscle on your body

and you are supos to let your bodys muscles rest after a work out but what that means is let that worked muscle rest not your whole body

at the moment i do

day 1 chest
day 2 back
day 3 deltoids
day 4 arms
day 5 legs
day 6 short intense cardio
day 7 catch up day from missing a day or rest or start at chest again

Thanks Maggie - well done on the weight loss.

I have lost 11lbs since I started taking Alli/reducing my fat intake about 3 weeks ago. I took Alli for a week, and then stopped for the last two, and have managed to keep my fat to between 60-80g a day, my carbs low - 25-40g and my water high! Am feeling really good about things, and may just use Alli for the last surge. Will post pics later.

p.s. Am not endorsing Alli with Atkins, as it is too high in fat a diet to be a happy coupling, but I hold my hands up and admit I didn't count my food and ended up eating way too much fat. It can't be said for certain whether pulling up the reins on my diet, or the addition of Alli was the catalyst for this little whooshie, but I am happy in how I am doing.

Kind of sounds like you have already decided that the Alli is what you are going to do no matter what.

Does it??? Because I believe I just said that I stopped taking them two weeks ago, and repeatedly said throughout that I was going to try the pills (having bought a pack anyway) and see how it went, and if I didn't like them I would stop.

How exactly does that sound like 'I am going do Alli no matter what'?
