Fewer calories equal longer life --- At least in monkeys

By Denise Mann

Cutting daily calorie intake by 30 percent may put the brakes on the aging process, have beneficial effects on the brain, and result in a longer life span, according to a new 20-year study of monkeys published in the journal Science.

Calorie restriction needs to be done carefully in order not to turn into malnutrition, say experts.

The study confirms in primates what's long been known in other species, including mice, worms, and flies. And it's no surprise to the humans who have taken the animal research to heart and adopted calorie restriction as a means to a (hopefully) longer and healthier life.

Seriously, I just posted that as an info thing. I would never recommend a starvation diet to anyone.

I saw this on the news this morning -- the doctor who was interviewed said he wouldn't recommend cutting daily calories as drastically as the study on monkeys suggested. He also said when you cut calories you are getting less nutrition which can lead to osteoporosis and other health issues.

It's not a really new or cutting edge research. If I recall, I read about this theory about 10 years ago, or so. I guess he went far enough to collect data on monkeys. I would never recommend drastic caloric reduction unless the person was a competitive body builder a few weeks prior to the competition. Even then, I would never restrict my calories to less than 1500-1800 per day.
