Default Looking For A Doctor

Hi everyone!

I was wondering if there is a website that lists doctors who are supporters of Atkins. I am trying to find a doctor in my area who is ok with the Atkins diet. My current doctor is ok with low carbing as he suggests I follow but has a problem with Atkins. To me it sounds crazy. I need help with Atkins because I am having a problem eating enough protein. I would really like another option of getting my protein in aside from having to eat so much meat. I am not a big meat eater and I don't know what else to do as some protein items have milk and other stuff in them.

What's your daily protein intake, in grams? Eggs have a high PER. If you are scared of cholesterol, maybe you can use egg whites and lecithin granules to fatten them up. Ask one of the moderators about this one, but I believe whey protein isolates are okay.

My problem is maintaining a high nitrogen balance while sleeping. That 6-8 hour fast is catabolic by nature. Casein is probably the best protein source before going to bed but it is not an induction legal food. I use full fat, low carb cottage cheese (California style) before bed time, but again, I'll stress that it will probably cause you to stall. Cottage cheese is not legal on induction.

The good part about Atkins is that if your fats are high enough they will spare protein.

I know my family doctor supports it but she is in Pennsylvania so it's not much help! Try to Google PCP's that support Atkins. Maybe there is a national list somewhere?? Sorry I'm not much help.

You need the doctor for protein? Why not look for other protein sources you can eat?
Do you eat eggs? fish? tofu?
Have you started to move up the rungs (Cottage cheese, and peanuts are around the corner?)

I've used isopure Zero carb (low carb actually 3 carbs p 50g protein) shakes but they have so much protein and are so low in fat, I've had to cut them out. They are really whey protein isolate, which means the whey is really refined. But you can easily mix a half a shake and get 25g of protein from them. Then you gotta figure out where to get your fat. But anybody can order the shakes, you don't have to have a doctor to buy these. Google for the best prices on the mix, its about $1.50 a shake if find the right seller. I order it by the bucket. Then use something like fitday.com to really work on getting your diet balanced. You might check for weightloss doctors in general in your area and then make some calls. I can't imagine a GP trying to be a diet doctor anyway.

I drink coffee. I drink when I am thirsty. I am just a low carber. Not on Atkins at all!!! He has everything to do with my weightloss and nothing to do with it, depending on who you ask.

Great idea RitaC.! I've been using EAS, which has about 3 grams carb in it. The protein content is low, though, at about 23 grams (I use 2 scoops). I usually start drinking the shake during the last two sets of my weight training routine. I mix it on occasion with 1 tablespoon lecithin for the ALA, etc., and the phospho-choline / inositol. But I usually stay away from all things soy.

I would think, unless someone is on the fat fast or something, that if you consumed 60% fat and under 3% CHO, the protein would be sufficiently high. I just don't understand why someone would want more than 0.5 grams of protein per lb of lean muscle mass unless trying to force anabolism and to keep nitrogen balance high. I keep my protein at about 150-200 grams per day.

Thank you all for responding. Honestly, I am not sure how much protein I consume each day. Not quite good at that part. The reason for the doctor is not for protein reasons, although I do need help with that. I'd just like to have a doctor that supports Atkins. My doctor tries to tell me how much of what to eat and I'm like can't do that on Atkins just yet. I'm not sure he understands the concept and I'm not trying to help him.

I guess I'm just looking for some sort of support here at home. I have you all online but some at-home support would be great too. So that's why I'm searching for a doctor here. I'm about to give up Atkins and go off plan because I am having a hard time. I can't stay on plan and it's like mentally I can't get back into Induction.

It's tough when we go through some emotional, stressful event and our minds look for comfort. It can be food, alcohol or drugs. I had major issues with my dad, stress and university so I turned to the bottle. That's what caused my weight gain.

It's very difficult going through tough times and it really when people tell you it will pass. You've lost weight on Atkins and that has been a major goal towards how you feel about yourself. I've noticed something funny. When I feel good about myself, I seem to attract new acquaintances and the older ones seem to distance themselves from me.

I sincerely hope everything works out for you.
