Thumbs down Having surgery - how will this effect my "ketosis"?

I am almost 1 full month on Atkins and down 22 pounds and doing great. Have not waivered at all and still on extended induction.

However, I am having some MAJOR sinus surgery (6 procedures in one operation) and part of the surgery is very delicate so i am a bit nervious. I have major messed up sinuses in all areas of my face. I have been warned that when I come out of surgery that I could have some eye damage from part of my sinus removal behind my right eye... I am crossing my fingers I am not one of the 20%.

Anyways, for the first couple of days he wants me on a liquid type diet . What can I have???? Right now I dont eat any soupy type things so then I started to worry about my diet during this time on what I can eat.

HELP!

Hi Tracy!

Good luck with your diet and your surgery.

If I were you, I would make soups in advance because you will not feel like cooking in recovery. Do you have a food processor, a blender or a hand blender?

Do you need soup recipes? Here's one for chicken and mushroom below. However, you will need fat to stay on the plan, so I'd do lots of soups along this line with fatty beef and beef stock, too. Do you need more recipes? I can also provide you with a nice asian breakfast soup recipe for the mornings if that will help!

Induction Chicken Soup

One chicken breast on the bone
One cups sliced mushrooms
1/2 cup leeks*
1/2 cup onions*
One to two cups low-salt chicken stock, add extra water as needed

Fry the onions, mushrooms and leeks in butter. Put it in a pot with the chicken breast and the stock and simmer for two hours without a lid. Strain it through a colander retaining the liquid.

Pick the chicken off the bone (or remove all the little bones, if it's fallen off the bone.) Put everything - chicken, stock, veggies - into a blender and blend.

*These take up your one cup of "other vegetables" so just be careful.

I made a roast beef and added extra water to make extra broth. When the roast was done (and we ate most of it for dinner) I took a few ounces of the beef and all the broth and added cauliflower, colored peppers, a little onion, and other induction vegetables. Boiled everything until everything was done and ate it.....I had enough to freeze 3 bowls of soup for later. This may be something you can do.

Also there is a Texas Chili recipe on Linda's site. Check the soup recipes to see if there is anything you like. Linda's Low Carb Menus & Recipes - Soup Recipes

I agree to make these before you go in for surgery since you won't feel like standing and cooking for a few days. Good luck on your surgery (and congrats on your weight loss this far!!)

As much as I personally don't like it, what about the Eggnog "shake" thing that is floating around the recipe area?

Sugar Free Sheila also has some shake recipes on her site:

I wish you all the best with your surgery...my thoughts are with you.

Try making Gazpacho- it's like putting Salad in a Blender - tomatoes, cucumbers , peppers, green onions (or any other kind - i think these are the least carby), celery if u like, salt, fresh parsley, fresh basil, oregano, lemon juice >>> add ice cubes and refrigerate (eat this cold)

U can google for a recipe and adjust it to control the carb level

Good Luck with your surgery - May you get through this in Good Health!

Gazpacho is a great idea - which reminds me, maybe you should have a few cans of V8 on hand for emergencies. (Better a can of V8 than a chocolate milkshake!) The 5.5oz cans have 7g of carbs once you subtract the fibre and it's the only totally pre-prepared food I can think of you could eat on a day or morning you're struggling. (I've had major surgery and recovery really can kick your butt but it gets better after the first few days!)

Think about adding grated parmesan cheese or cream - within limits obviously - to make veg soups more protein rich and filling (and yummy) ---Usually these are added toward the end of the recipe once the soup has cooked.

Unfortunately, we aren't allowed to have juices. Gazpacho is't a juice because it's just pureed veggies and it includes all the fiber and other goodness found in whole vegetables. Vegetable juices like V8, removes the fiber, etc.
