Smile FYI ~ How To Safley Store Your Flax & Flax Oil !!!

How To Safley Store Your Flax & Flax Oil !!!

I just though I would pass along the following info
on how to safely store your Flax to keep it from
spoiling. If it is kept at room temp it will have a
very short shelf life. It should be used within 3
months of opening.

Best not bought in bulk unless kept refridgerated
and you know for certain the store has a high turn over.

If your's happens to spoil it will have a bad odor and/or taste to it, so you will be able to notice it right away & do not use it.

It is best to keep the package tightly closed after
opening and either in the Fridge if you will be using
it quickly or its best to use right out of the Freezer.
I also keep any extra unopened boxes/package
I happen to have in the Freezer also. Don't worry
it will not freeze.

I have posted a link below for a site with a lot of good info about Flax along with recipe's. Also posted below is a link for the "Muffin in a Minute aka~ MiM" & Flax Sandwitch Buns for anyone that may need them to go along with their new box/package of Flax.

Please Note: The Above Link to Atkins.com there They state that Flax is legal on Induction. Here we follow the Book and not Rules since changed by the Company after Dr Atkins' passing. So the rule for Induction is that Flax is only allowed for Fibre issues and Constipation. (As in rule 12 of the List of Rules for Induction)

Flax Sandwich Buns
http://www.genaw.com/lowcarb/flax_sandwich_buns.html

"Cold-Milled Flax"

Cold-milled flax doesn't need to be refrigerated, but it won't hurt it to keep it cool. The flax meal I buy at Costco has a good explanation of why refrigeration for that brand isn't necessary, so I think it's a good choice for traveling or storage when refrigerator space is at a premium!

"Flax Oil Tips"

1. Buy it refridgerated

2. Keep refridgerated at home even before opening

3. Use within 6 weeks of opening (Once open don't go by date on bottle;that is for unopened flax oil.

4. You cannont cook with flax oil

5. Has been shown to be beneficial for someone with dermatitis also known as eczema.

One Tbsp of flax oil provides about 5g of omega 3 (ALA). About 15% of the ALA gets
converted to EPA and about 5% to DHA.

Flax meal is very beneficial but cooking flax meal destroys the omega 3 content because it is a short chain fatty acid. The protein and fiber are not affected. So enjoy MIM's and try sprinkling some flax meal on salad or in smoothies appropriate for your carb threshold.

I hope this info will help you on your Atkins Journey!!!

Interesting. Does this info/warnings relate to Flaxseed oil pills, or just liquid flaxseed oil?

Slapshot ~ I would use either the Flax Oil or the Cap's within six weeks of opening.

I would also keep it in the fridge. Flax oil just isn't stable and goes rancid quickly. Always buy in small quantity and refrigerated. If it smells funny discard.

While I use Flax Oil in my vinaigrette, Fish Oils are a better choice as a Supplement.
