Default Sodium Lactate

Here I thought I found a TRUE sugar-free nitrite-free, and I saw that sodium lactate (made from beets) was one of the ingredients.

How does this crap affect our bodies?

Please, only someone who knows answer...

Are you talking About bacon? If so, what brand is it?

Sodium lactate is harmless and formed from the breakdown of lactic acid. Used in many many foods (and soaps).

Default Re: Sodium Lactate

Sodium Lactate is added to meats to prevent spoilage and extend storage life as it has a broad antimicrobial action. It is effective at inhibiting pathogenic bacteria.

Lactates are used as preservatives, mainly against yeasts and fungi. It is also used to increase stability of anti-oxidants and to prevent drying of different products.

Adverse effects of Sodium Lactate are essentially limited to overdosage of either sodium or lactate ions.

Sodium lactate is the sodium salt of lactic acid. Soap made with sodium lactate is easier to cut, crumbles less and lasts longer in use because of the hardness imparted by this wonderful additive.

Okay. Was concerned because I noticed it's made from beets or corn and results in a "sugar," which turns into saline... I can't even conceive how they come up with these things.

What was the brand? The holy Grail of bacon is nitri(a)te free and no sugar added bacon. I've been looking for a while and haven't found it.

That's because I don't believe it exists. Be wary of people saying it's both sugar-free AND nitrite-free-- please verify on your own. Do not just blindly accept what others say because people will spread a lot of false information. Before you know it, you will start gaining weight or stop losing weight because you're following what these "veteran" low-carbers are telling you.

I was talking about hot dogs. The brand is Applegate Farms. It's a sugar-free, nitrite-free hot dog.

Although I'm always looking for a "legal" bacon, I've settled on these hot dogs. You would not BELIEVE how flavorful they are. Besides, bacon every single day can get boring. I slice 1 or 2 hot dogs, saute them and add to eggs. It's so much more filling than bacon, plus you don't have the sugar or nitrites. You'll find this brand at Whole Foods. I've never seen it anywhere else, but I bet you could find it at a local gourmet market. Another interesting thing about them is that both the carbs and sugars are listed as zero-- I notice most hot dogs usually have at least one carb or one sugar gram listed when they have either sugar (also counting things that end in -ose) or nitrites somewhere in the ingredients. So, I'm guessing this brand has zero carbs and sugars because they truly use zero sugar and zero nitrites.

The only question I had (that someone answered previously in this thread) was whether sodium lactate has any impact on our diet (well, my diet-- I'm doing CAD). Sodium lactate is in these hot dogs. I wasn't comfortable accepting I had a legit low-carb food when I knew it contained this "mystery" ingredient, so I did some research and found out something interesting... sodium lactate is created from beets or corn, turned into a SUGAR and then turned into saline. Although the end product is sodium, I wonder if the fact that it has to be turned into a sugar at some point causes any problems with a low-carb diet. Still, I think it must be better to eat sodium over dextrose, sugar, honey, etc.

I'm going to talk to a scientist or food lab technician and get to the bottom of it. I'll let you all know when I find out.

thanks for the reply. The source of my confusion/question was due to the fact that your initial post didn't identify the food. I was hoping it was bacon...oh well.
