Default Butter

Good Morning,

What brand of butter do you all use/recommend?

I have been using Land O Lakes Whipped Butter since starting Atkins. And last night I saw a little banner up on the corner of the container that says "as always 45% less fat". Is that okay? Fitday does have a "whipped Butter" and populates a reading of 0.0056g carbs.

I only use the same brand of stick butter whenever I make clouds, because it was easier to measure, and it comes in handy 1/2 stick portions. The values on the stick butter are just about double. So may question is is the whipped butter ok to use?

Sorry these columns are not lining up, and tried to fix them but they keep bunching together.

1 TAB. Cal Fat SatFat Chol Sod Carb Prot
Whipped 50 6 3. 15 50 0 0
Stick 100 11 7 30 95 0 0

Both say:
Ingredients:Sweet Cream, Salt
Contains:Milk

Default Re: Butter

I would think because butter is ultimately made from milk that all real butter has trace amounts of carbs in it. I personally use the Land O Lakes whipped butter...or the store brand of whipped butter.

To be sure check the ingredients on the label and make sure there is no added sugar.

I used to only eat margarine...but have really started liking real butter now.

Default Re: Butter

I think the reason that the whipped butter has less fat/calories, etc by volume is that it is whipped....it has air incorporated in it. Comparing whipped butter to "solid" butter is like comparing whipped cream to whipping cream...once the cream is whipped it is half air, so by volume (i.e. tablespoon, cup) it has 1/2 the calories/fat. By weight, it would be the same.

I usually use Kate's Homemade butter. Sometimes I buy Kerrygold Irish butter. When they have the sales on butter (<$2/pound) I buy LOL or store brand and I buy LOL or store brand unsalted butter (whichever is cheaper) for use in recipes that call for unsalted.

That's a fairly new banner on the LOL whipped butter. Like many other food manufacturers, they like to jump on the latest food trend bandwagon. When low carb was popular some years ago, you would see "low carb" notations on all sorts of products. Now the big thing is low fat so they are trying to market to those people.

Like Julie wrote, it's lower fat by volume compared to stick. LOL whipped butter is definitely OK to use.

I use Kerrygold (80% fat). It's not the cheapest, but it's creamier than other butters I tried. I don't know if there is a salted version of it, but in Germany the butter you buy in supermarkets is usually unsalted... and I think it tastes better that way.

I use whatever butter is on sale and store them in the freezer. And since the holiday baking season is approaching, butter sales will be common in the next couple of months.

Just a caution on the Land o'Lakes spreadable butter. It's butter mixed with either canola oil or olive oil so that it can spread straight out of the frig. For me, it has a butter-flavored margarine taste rather than a butter-butter taste.

The Kerrygold I buy is salted...never seen an unsalted version here. I wish they did have it though. Salted butter seems to be the popular product here in the States and most of the butters are salted with just a few packages of unsalted butters.

You're right...Kerrygold is not the cheapest, but boy, it is good.

I use "De Zaanse Hoeve Roomboter". It's a creamy tasting butter with 82% fat, and comes as a soild block.

It is the store brand, but so tasty.

First time when I was in the US, I just picked a random brand off the shelf. When I tasted it I was like, "what the heck is this?!?!"

I use unsalted ... mostly Land o' Lakes. I have some Costco unsalted in the freezer.

I wouldn't use whipped butter for anything other than putting on vegetables. I wouldn't cook with it ... because of it being whipped.
