Question What's on Your Shopping List?

My trip today to Fresh & Easy got me thinking about how I used to shop for food compared to now. Before, I'd invariably show up at the checkout counter with:

    • Pasta & Rice
    • Pizza
    • Bread
    • Muffins
    • Frozen Appetizers & Dinners
    • Chips
    • Cookies
    • Pastries & Cereal
    • Nuts
    • Ice Cream
    • Soda
    • Candy and other carby snacks

Of course, I'd buy fresh meat and dairy and the occasional frozen veg. But the only fresh veggies I'd buy were usually in the form of extremely pricey bagged salads...most of which ended up being thrown away because I'd never get around to eating them! All told, it wasn't unusual for my shopping trips to end up being $200 per week - a lot of it complete crap. And we would *still* end up eating take out dinner once a week and I'd buy lunch out a couple of times a week.

Today's trip found this in my basket:

    • Shrimp
    • Halibut
    • Pork Tenderloin
    • Ground beef
    • Uncured bacon
    • Spinach
    • Zucchini
    • Broccoli
    • Tomatoes
    • Bell Peppers
    • Carrots (shush)
    • Green Beans
    • Green Onions
    • Celery
    • Cucumber
    • Nuts
    • Mineral Water

For $67.76 - $15.97 of which was to splurge on the halibut! Minus the halibut, if I added a pound of chicken breast ($3.99), a packet of uncured honey maple ham ($3.99), a dozen eggs ($2.99), a container of mushrooms ($2.49), a bag of shallots ($1.49), a stick of butter ($0.50) and a half-pint of cream ($1.29), I'd be set for six days, three meals a day, for $68.53.

So, how has your shopping cart changed since adopting this WoE/WoL?

I don't have any more fat free or low fat products in my cart...now I have real butter, cream, cheese, etc. No more Lean Cuisines either.

I almost NEVER go down the aisles anymore...just shop the perimeter of the store. Still takes me almost as long though!

Yesterday I came home with 10 Hungry Man meals because they were on sale 2 for $5, lol. Of course I'll never actually eat them (and even when I was eating them, I've never actually finished an entire one). I bought them for my husband because he was complaining about not having food at work. So now he has 2 weeks worth of lunches that he'll actually eat.

OTHER then that - I came home with the following:

1 pork roast (it had lots of yummy fat on it too!!)
    2 simmering steaks
    2 green peppers
    2 zucchini
    1 eggplant
    4 tomatoes
    1 pkg mushrooms
    1 brick of cheese
4L Whole Milk (for my kids)
    Feta Cheese
Breakfast Sausage Links (no fillers too!)

I was just filling things up til I could do a proper shopping. Normally if I was doing one of those kinds of trips I would have come home with the following:

    Soda for my husband
    Orange Juice
    2 cans of pasta sauce
    1 package of shell pasta
    parmesan cheese
    lean ground beef
    Coffee Cake for dessert
    Bagels
    Cream Cheese
    Cereal
Maybe a bag of chips or two for night time tv watching

    Goal 3 - 50 lbs down (December 1st, 2009)
    Goal 4 - Highest Pregnancy Weight with 1st right before c-section (February 20, 2010)
Goal 5 - Lowest weight reached on WW after having 1st child
    Goal 6 - 100 lbs down
    Goal 7 - Pre-pregnancy weight with 1st
Goal 8 - Weight I met my husband
    Goal 9 - 150 lbs down
    Goal 10 - Weight in Grade 8
    Goal 11 - Weight in Grade 6

My shopping cart at the supermarket is usually full by the time I'm past the first section...which is VEGGIES!!!
Everything else (meat, cheese, fish etc.) has to get squeezed in.
I often do a "separate" shop for the rest of the family's stuff.

Hi shrew that is such a wonderful illustration of how Atkins help us get healthier.

I always used to by some whole food, meat, veggies and fruit but I was big on easy foods. Thinking about it now I cannot believe how much chemicals and trans fat I must have downed
I used to by a lot of

    • Pre made dinners (pasta, lasagna, pizza)
    • Half made dinners (just add milk, margarine - like macncheese and other such noodle side dishes)
    • Bars and cereals (I actually thought they were good for me DUH)
    • Breads - I always ate a lot of store baked goods - loaded with sugars and trans fat - Jeez!!!!
    • Milk - low fat (I have come to understand that the way they process this food to get it to be low fat is quite destructive for any good quality milk may actually have)
    • Light margarine (hydrogenated heaven)
    • Chips and chocolates (nice carb and fat - deadly mixture there)
    • Pasta - yes I loved it - spaghetti squash has taken its place and I am still happy
    • Pop - with artificial sweeteners - lots of chemicals every day

    Now I do buy

    • Clean meats and fish (no additives)
    • Vegetables and a bit of fruit (local and in season if possible. New vegetables that Atkins has got me into has been peas in pods, jicama, pumpkin, spaghetti squash, chayote squash, loads of peppers)
    • Butter, oils
    • Nuts (I used to down processed snacks - I am more into nuts now)
    • Cocoa powder
    • Whey powder (A new thing for me - but I love it)
    • Cream
    • yogurt - full fat not additives
    • Almond milk
    • Sparkly water flavoured with real lemon some times
