    Default Interesting video lecture...

For those of you so inclined, this is an interesting video.
I warn that it is a little heavy in the middle on the science details/biochemistry, but some of us really enjoy that sort of thing and even if not, anyone can still get the big picture of this hypothesis. I also warn that it is over an hour long, but I felt it was time well spent. He goes into the obesity epidemic, public health and agriculture policy, sugar metabolism, etc. Some very interesting points made.

This video was brought to my attention from an email newsletter from that "quack" doctor, Dr. Joseph Mercola (note, I do not truly think him a quack though he may be referred to that way by some)... whom I do think somewhat of an extremist on some things, but often also feel he has the right general ideas even if he sometimes carries them quite far... and the fact that he basically supports the Atkins Diet in general doesn't hurt, LOL!

Robert H. Lustig, MD, UCSF Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Endocrinology, explores the damage caused by sugary foods. He argues that fructose (too much) and fiber (not enough) appear to be cornerstones of the obesity epidemic through their effects on insulin. Glad you enjoyed it - I certainly did.

I was totally shocked by the content of baby formula - "a baby milkshake" as he describes it, as high a sugar percentage as a can of cola. Unbelievable. And though I never drank any of the "sports drinks" with any great regularity even before Atkins, save for one summer working outside every day, I certainly would think twice if I ever picked one up again and would not be guzzling with abandon like the ads always show.

I was also thrilled to hear him say a calorie is NOT a calorie, because despite that being drilled to the public for however long now, I have never believed it. I ran my daily intake of calories through countless calculators over my adult life, and I can't remember the calculators ever coming to the conclusion that I ate enough calories to even sustain whatever high weight I was AT at the time , much less continue to slowly gain as I always did until a few years ago when I started losing by nearly eliminating processed foods from my diet (including a lot of low fat concoctions that never helped me lose an ounce to my knowledge). It makes it frustrating for an obese person like me to constantly be told to just cut back calories below XXX point and you won't be fat anymore when it so obviously doesn't work even by the experts' own calculations as I was ALREADY below that point and GAINING. Calories matter to some degree, but so does the TYPE of calories, obviously.

The politics of the matter are interesting, too. It seems that if your industry has enough political clout, even truth can bent in such a way that you can get away with slow murder. The tobacco industry was another example for many many years.

Something I learned from the video is that IF, and I do mean IF, one wants to sweeten a drink or something to eat, one might consider using only glucose, which is reasdily available, but expensive and normally used only by diabetics. For example, if you're going to have a coffee before exercising and you're not going to use artificial sweetener, a few grams of glucose - say 10 grams (40 cal) - would be completely burned by the body during the first few minutes of exercise and not stored as fat. Again, this is IF one wants sweet, but doesn't want to use artificial sweeetener. (BTW, I haven't used either added sugar or artificial sweetener since Oct. 17, 09 and I haven't missed it a bit.)

    Thanks again for the link.

Glucose = sugar, so it's not Atkins friendly.
