  • Induction diabetis type 2 question

My husband has been a type 2 diabetic for 11 years. With meds his fasting blood glucouse is 120ish. He started Atkins on wednesday of this week. Thursday morning and this morning both he had fasting blood glucose numbers in the 160's. He takes metformin 3 pills a day.
My question is... Is that normal? If he is not getting in a lot of carbs why is his sugar readings higher in the mornings? Will this improve over time? And if so how much time. He has lost 3 pounds but is really discouraged by his blood sugar numbers.
Thanks for your advice/experience in advance.

Re: Induction diabetis type 2 question

Is the number just high in the AM or all day? some folk need to eat a snack before bed to lower AM blood sugar and others need to avoid it to lower AM blood sugars. does he have a set eating routine? Have y'all read DR ATKINS NEW DIET REVOLUTION 2002 edition known as DANDR around here or are y'all using the diabetic book?

his body is releasing it's gycogen stores as glucose right now. those stores should be gone by day 4 and ketosis in full swing dropping his blood sugar levels.

Also how is his protein intake? excess protein not needed for cellular repair and growth will convert to sugar and raise blood sugar too. He might actually end up with too low blood sugar and need his meds adjusted downward. Make sure he is talking with his treatment team about this change in eating.

Using DANDR. Not the diabetes book.
He has Atkins flu and is kind of a night owl and works at home. Anyway I'm making his meals. Previously his eating habits were really off but now eating every 5 to 6 hours.
Meal 1 (he never eats breakfast, but I'm fixing him one now) a salad with 2 cups lettuce, tomato garnish, .5 ounce grated cheese, 1 tablespoon pepper ranch and 2 slices crisp crumbled bacon
Meal 2 was a small steak (.3 pound) with 2 pieces of bacon on top, the topped with 1 ounce melted pepper jack cheese. For flavor cause he is used to ketchup and not getting it. and 3/4 cup asparagus (1/4 cup comes from tom at meal one and salsa at meal 3)
Meal 3 was a 3 egg omlet prepared with 2 tablespoons cream, 2 pieces crumbled bacon, 2 tablesppons homemade salsa (tomato and jap pepper) and 4 twigs of cilantro.
2 to 3 cups coffee no sweetner, just a little cream. Lots of water and no other drinks.
Yes he loves bacon and is requesting it so trying to spread it out throughout the day.
Sugar numbers have been high throughout the day.
Blood pressure was down slightly this morning, but still elevated.
Doctor is very supportive, really wants him to get his weight down and cut down on simple carbs. Wants him to stick with the low carb, low glycemic choices but limit his fat some, which we will work on once he gets very his flu experience. Also once he gets to feeling better he will get back into his exercise but feeling weak and lethargic at the moment, usually does 30 to 45 minutes a day of either bike riding, walking or pushups/body sculpting stuff.
He no longer lifts weight but he has a temendous amount of muscle through the arms, shoulders and back if that means anything.
      Thanks again for your help.

Re: Induction diabetis type 2 question

fasting blood sugar was 146 this morning
        and blood pressure was 148/85
        Both are better.
        Hope they continue.
He seems to feel better today. I think his induction flu is gone.
        Thanks again.

what is he doing for exercise to burn off those blood sugars? exercise will help lower it too.

some folk have issues with tomato and/or onion sugars so that might be a concern for y'all just watch it and compare a blood sugar 2 hours after a meal with them and the same meal without them to see. you will need several testings to see because one test does not a pattern make.

Glad his flu is over. how is the blood sugar now?

Re: Induction diabetis type 2 question

Yesterday it was in the 146. He said with a big grin without meds, so I think he cut his night time pill out the night prior. The top number on his blood pressure was within normal ranges and his bottom number was a little high. I know he said his blood sugar was fine yesterday and took 1/2 a pill before breakfast and then before lunch no idea about last night.

My biggest issue with him is he hates his blood pressure meds and he absolutely doesn't take them. Side effects=migraines. So I told him he could give atkins a try and probably get a good hold on his diabetes and the blood pressure would follow. At least I am hoping. And he is trying. At least he can see if it will work for him.

Exercise: Varies.... He will walk 2 miles with me on some days or ride bikes for about 30 minutes on others.

Allergic to onions, eats minimal tomatoes. But will keep that in mind.

Not showing a big loss either yet. Just 4 pounds.

Thanks again for all your help. I'm eating induction with him since I'm preparing his foods and actually lost a few more pounds.

Re: Induction diabetis type 2 question

messing with his meds will effect the blood sugasr readings as the body takes time to adjust and make up for the missing chems from the drugs.

Atkins is a natural diuretic so it can help blood pressure as can blood sugar stabilizing in the normal range as high sugar raises blood pressure. Ask him to keep a record of every med change he makes so his doc when he rechecks him will be aware of this too. it is hard to rememebr next week let a lone next dr appointment when you changed what.

Re: Induction diabetis type 2 question

He is keeping records. His doctor sees him every 3 months. Just to keep an eye on his diabetes and high blood pressure and tryglicerides. He has tried 6 different high blood pressure meds and has had bad reactions to each. Just feels he is on a roller coaster with them. Can not find one that works well for him. Hoping if he can get his blood sugaar to stabalize his blood pressure will too. THings are looking better and he is felling better.
His big fear is his blood sugar will go too low with his meds so he is checking it before he takes his pills. And taking smaller doses as needed.

Re: Induction diabetis type 2 question

ask him to call his doc and explain this issue and fear about the blood sugar dropping too low now. they may cut or change his dose strength and/or med. Many of ADBB's diabetic type 2 folk have gotten off meds completely.

The blood pressure is a tricky issue. if the blood sugar was the cause and if a diuretic would help lower it then Atkins will help. Some foods can lower blood pressure too and many of them are Atkins legal too. BUt some times their are other reasons for high blood pressure and medicatrion is needed for those causes

                  Good luck.
