I am thinking about doing Atkins, but I have type 1 diabetes and was wondering about how effective it is when insulin levels are totally regulated by yourself and not your body. I was wondering if any other type 1 diabetics have been sucessful with Atkins with controlling your blood sugar.

Hi and welcome, yes we have several I's here, of course you would never get off insulin totally but several have got off pumps and onto a long acting shot with lesser amts of insulin, which in long run is better for body to cope with. More insulin you use harder it is on veins and arteries in long run.
Many have lost weight and you would have to test really frequently, as your risk of having serious lows would be even more dangerous than a II.test prior to eating so regulate amt injected and then two hr after to see if took too much as for many its drops quickly….we are all unique.
I was on insulin and within 32 hr had to stop totally as glucose levels in bode dropped so quickly.
Better starting by reading the book; get creatine levels done for sure for sure and other blood tests in the book. Most docs are not for it, having said that we are not docs and you must utilize your own diabetic team as well, have you read new Diabetic revolution by Atkins, it is helpful, if doing diet program for weight loss just monitor self closely, use us for support and info, we’d happily help you where we can.
Know you will get plunder and bonked on head daily form non-believers, read my story and some of the stickers up top and you will see why we are firm believers.
Thnx for joining us and hope to hear from you as you begin your journey. :wave

I am a type 1 and i have been successful with atkins. You can read my story on the pumpers thread.
It sounds like you already know the difference between type 1 and 2, so you know you will have to be very careful. I have talked to many people on this board who say their doctors agree with atkins (for type 1s), but all of my doctors are against it... just a warning to be prepared for what your doctors will have to say about it.
