I am Type 1, can i go on adkins??

Hey guys new here, just wanted to know if i can go on the adkins diet, I really want to try and keep my numbers perfect and loose some weight, will adkins work for me being that I am type 1 diabetic? thanks guys!!

hi there, Rich. I'm also type 1 (on the pump) and have been on Adkins since Aug 15th. I feel so much better eating this way. I was a little scared about cutting my carbs down and getting low when I 1st started...but I haven't had to worry about that much. Because I'm on the pump I can adjust my basal rate if I feel like my numbers are too low. I would keep a detailed diary of what you eat and how your body reacts to what you're eating...this way if your dr needs to adjust your dosage they can.

If you have any other questions feel free to ask. You're the 1st type 1 (other than me) that I've seen on here.

Thank you so much! I am not on the pump and i seems like i would be able to reduce the numbers of shots I take on adkins, I am showing ketones but with normal blood sugar between 100-120, is this a problem? or a good way to loose weight?

welcome to ADBB and to Atkins we have some other type 1s but they don't post unless they are having issues since they are doing so well.

keep a food log and test your blood sugars often so you know how you are reacting as many folk have had to drastically reduce their blood sugar meds while doing Atkins.

be careful not to get your protein too high as you know excess protein will be converted to sugar in your body and can spike your blood sugars. 30% of your total cals is all the protein we need doing atkins.

if you don't have a food calculating software you can use the free online site www.fitday.com to log and track you foods.

mine have ranged anywhere between 80-120. I've seen the biggest difference in my morning sugars...before starting Adkins I would be a lot higher for my fasting sugars (dawn phenomena). I feel so much healthier now.
I continue to have ketones too...and it scared me at 1st because as a diabetic we're told not to develop ketones, but my understanding is that its a different type of ketone (not the one that leads to ketoacidosis). Its a learning process.

these ketones are in a much lower concentration then ketoacidossi levles and you are also developing then on purpose not because you don't have insulin to metabilize your sugars but because you have cut the sugar level down so you need to use your fats as fuels. Now if your blood sugar spikes and stasys up with ketones present in large amounts then you need to worry but since you are eatting Atkins low carb you will not have a blood sugar spike unless you miss your dose of insulin or you cheat.
