  • I know you're out there!

My 15 month old is still nursing, and I've been on Atkins for about a month now. His ped said that ketones in breast milk shouldn't hurt him, and my baby doesn't appear to be suffering any ill effects -- in fact, he had his 15-month visit yesterday and he's grown two inches since September. :yikes

I really wish I'd begun Atkins before this, but was reluctant to when I was my son's main source of nourishment. Now I'm thinking it probably would have been OK. Live and learn.

My DW is nursing our 8mo old. We called Atkins and they don't recommend it (but I think they are just afraid of being sued). While I think the nursing has made my wife lose veerrrryyy slowly, it hasn't hurt my boy. He's literally off the charts for height and weight, and he's developing ahead of schedule (but he has older sibling to keep up with).

Jim, I also figured that it was for liability reasons. I don't seem to be losing really quickly either, but I figure slow loss is better than none and my son's bound to stop nursing sometime between now and kindergarten.

Absolutely, slow is better than none.

My DW has only lost about 15 but I think she looks like she's lost twice that or more. The great thing about this WOE is that everything shows so quickly (to others at least). She gets tons of compliments.

I posted a pic of her progress in Century Club, the first is at the baby's christening 4/18, at 3-1/2 weeks old, the second is from yesterday.

2 cents worth>>If this WOE is harmful to infants/or nursing moms...it seems contradictory to me...as humans we began foraging for meat and berries and such (lo carb)...and back then our species breastfed as the ONLY way to nourish our young!!!....so why would it be bad for them? They did not have cupboards of carbs to load up on?!? :confused It just simply does not make sense to me...lo carb seems to be the way our species was designed to eat. So, opinion-wise, I agree this must just be told to us to keep the lawsuit happy wolves at bay! ensive

I started back on Atkins when my DD was 9 months old. I did notice that my supply would plummet if I didn't stay above 40 carbs a day or so. Usually I would have one piece of fruit a day and make sure my liquid intake was good! She weaned in September...but I too noticed that I lost VERY slowly while still nursing...it was like my body was scared to let go of the fat...it may need it to make milk type of thing... October I jumped fully back on the induction/ Atkins wagon and am now losing at a good pace!

My take on the whole ketones in breast milk.. WHell what the heck do all those people in tribes eat mostly meat and I was reading a documentary and they have the healthies babies out there and no sickness. SOme llive to be over 100. One of the tribal men was 120 and still walking and eating like a promagna man. What gives. I breast fed my baby on atkis actually 2 of them they are all really healthy and they are all eating on this WOE. SO I really don't think it hurts them. This is my opinion and I won't waver. My kids are extremely healthy and rarely get sick except this last bout but, they get over stuff quickly.
I also think that many people are so misinformed and really don't read between the lines. There are so many people out there who eat this way for their life have babies and live healthy lives why don't they test them and the input I can imagine would be amazing. They are healthier then us. Imagine no processed foods only wht you kill or pick. Without all that crap in the body I believe in my heart we would all live longer. I wish sometimes they would ban sugar. LOL

                  Banning sugar..my DH would die..lol..

It is not to say that you can't be "on" atkins. Just that is is best to do maintenance.

My husband would die too if they banned sugar. I am doing Atkins next time I get pregant and we'll see. My doctor actually told me while I was doing it with my last I was doing great. I asked him about the ketones in my urin and did you know it is natural for women to have ketones when they are pregnant. So needless to say I relly don't hink it hurts. The last was my best pregnancy and I only gaind 25 pounds all on healthy promagnan eating LOL

Just FYI, Dr. Atkins himself said at least 3 separate occasions in DANDR that nursing mothers should not do the weight loss phases of Atkins.

                          From Chapter 10, pg 107
Pregnant women and nursing mothers may do the Lifetime Maintenance phase but should not do any of the weight loss phases Atkins.
                          From Chapter 10, pg 120
The weight loss phases of the Atkins Nutritional Approach are not appropriate for pregnant women and nursing mothers
                          From Chapter 18, pg 227
None of the weight loss phases is appropriate for pregnant women or nursing mothers...
While I wouldn't put a lot of stock in the corporate Atkins, I do put a lot of stock in what Dr. Atkins himself said and wrote. He thought it was important enough to mention several times.

My wife just recently stopped breastfeeding, and she basically did the lifetime maintenance phase while she was breastfeeding.

The people you describe ate what is basically the Lifetime Maintenance phases of Atkins, not the weight loss phases.

it isn't the weight loss foods being eating or even to food choices wil_d_thril. it is the rapid weight loss that effects the milk supply. The body thinking it is losing fat stores becaue a famine is coming shuts down any thing that expends cals that isn't vital for keeping the person alive and nursing a baby isn't a vital life function for the mother's body.

I'm so glad you found a knowledgible doc who didn't just repeat false info.

                              Happy low carbing to y'all.
