  • Question about Adkins Advantage Protein Bars

Right now I am on rung 5 and am at 45 net carbs. I'm not sure what to count on net carbs on the Advantage bars. I know it says count 3g on it, but the numbers do not add up. It has 18g carbs, 6 grams of fiber, and sugar alcohol is only 2g. To my simple mind that should still have 10g net carbs. Am I missing something? What should I count?

BTW, yes I know it is Frankenfood and I had one in my desk just in case of an emergency and one came up. So, now I need to count it. It looks like glycerin is pretty high on the ingredients list, but still unsure on what to count.

Atkins Advantage bars calculate their net carbs by removing not only the fiber but also the glycerine or polydextrose from the total carb count. They say these do not affect the blood sugar any more then fiber does and so should be removed when calcuating net carbs.

I'm glad you recognize that these are frankenfood and should be avoided. I completey agree with that sentiment.

My 'rule of thumb' with sugar alcohols etc is this:
If they affect my body with gastric problems (explosive diarrhea anyone?!?) I am allowed to deduct them or some of them depending on the affect but if they do not upset my body I count every pesky carb as I figure that my body is processing them like sugar.

This has kept me away from them on the whole btw as they use up my carb 'budget' too quickly to be a regular addition in OWL.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

The advantage bars taste soooo good after 2 weeks of induction, but last time I did the Atkins I ate way too many of them (and the Atkins shakes etc.) which I'm sure slowed me down.

Not only that, I'm pretty sure they've not been produced with people's health in mind, just as a way to make money off the low carb bandwagon. I mean, £1.89 for a bar of chocolate??!!

Even so, I'm probably going to have one today, but only because I have a job interview/assessment that is going to last a fair few hours, and I can't really roll up with a packed lunch lol!

Other than that, I'd avoid them like the plague!

Cheers mate, I think it went OK. It was for London's Metropolitan Police to be a voluntary police officer (Special Constable). The thing is, all the interviews and tests have to be equal for everybody, so the interviewers are like robots and don't give you any feedback. I'll find out in a couple of weeks I suppse!

Getting back on topic though, I had two Advantage bars today and they've given me really bad acid indigestion. I feel like I've been drinking bleach! I won't be "enjoying" those again any time soon!

What level of OWL are you at, Gar? Some of those bars contain wheat products so should be left till you reach the relevant rung of OWL.

Re: Question about Adkins Advantage Protein Bars

I only just started OWL today, but I was in the metropolitan police training school for 5 hours, and it's an hour and a half away from where I live so I figured better eat something almost Atkins legal than to eat the carb-laden junk they had in the vending machines.

I won't be eating any more though, they taste OK but I feel so rough now! I just really didn't have the option of taking food with me.

Sounds as if you did the best you could

I hope you feel better soon!
