  • Water filters anyone?

I'm in the market for a water filter, such as Brita, and was wondering if anyone has ever tried one? If so, can you really taste the difference between the regular tap and water that you've filtered?

Pros & cons about your experience would be greatly appreciated.

Currently, I'm thinking about getting one of those pitchers or dispensers that filter the water as opposed to the kind that you hook up to your faucet. My main reasoning is cost, but also I want good water at work as well.

We own a brita filter. Its one of those big boxy ones and I love it. We have to fill it up atleast every 2 days, the kids refuse to drink straight from the tap. A few of our friends have the small pitcher type but they complain it takes too long to fill up, and with the amount of water a person drinks daily thats alot of refills.
I looked it up, what I have is called the Ultramax dispenser, it holds 18 cups. I think they run about 30 bucks or so nowdays. I have never had any problem with mold, and run my brita through the dishwasher every now and again to clean it out.

I have an Italian one fixed to my tap. The water where I am is sometimes full of horrid brown stuff from the ancient pipes. They're supposed to change the whole system, which would be great; but meanwhile we wait... and wait... and wait.

My filter works really well. I love it.

I have a pur water filter attatched to my faucet. It works great. You can taste and smell the difference. I was surprised how bad the tap water smelled. It's gross! I never drink tap water anymore.

Same comment as Purple Rain over here. However, we are thinking of switching to a filter that is not on the faucet as it can get really cumbersome to change the filter in ours. Also, it can get grimy when you're washing the dishes. We love our water filter though, our water isn't the worst city water and actually can be quite enjoyable but once we have had it filtered for a while then go back and try to drink it, we notice a metallic flavor (probably from the pipes). I highly recommend getting one.

            Re: Water filters anyone?

I started out with a Brita pitcher years ago and really liked it but it is slow and I got tired of constantly refilling it. But our community water is heavily chlorinated and the carbon filter removes all trace of chlorine, so it was worth it.

I installed a dual-cartridge under-the-sink model that I love and use it to fill pitchers to keep refrigerated. It wasn't that expensive and the filters last 2 years.

              Re: Water filters anyone?

              We use the Brita pitcher.
We had the Brita on faucet tap. Our water has so much calcium in it that having the filter on the tap ruined the faucet, because the filter traps water in the tap, as opposed to having the tap open, where the residual water would just end up in the sink. The calcium in the water ended up preciptating into the faucet and gunking it up until no water would flow. We also had to replace the Brita on sink filters every other month, so it was pricey that way too. If you have an on sink filter, running hot water through it will ruin it. So that is an inconvenience, as well.

The plumber who replaced our faucet told us to use the pitchers only.

How much of a difference it makes is completely dependent on how bad your water quality is. Ours isn't that bad (oh, well, except for all the dubious chemicals in it) but on its bad days, it definitely tastes better with the filter.

We used to use a Brita pitcher because our water would get the metallic taste others have mentioned or sometimes it would smell like dirt. It made a huge difference, but the pitcher is very slow. I found out, though, that just filling a regular pitcher and putting it in the fridge overnight usually did the same thing.

I have a Brita pitcher (two of them at home because I drink alot of water and I like my water COLD!) Also I use the extra pitcher for cooking, like water for soup stocks or things like that.

I think it's a whole lot cheaper than buying bottled water---which isn't regulated in the US.
