Greek Yogurt Question :<)

I bought some for my kids to try out for me. since I am very looking forward to the dairy rung :<)..But it was fat free? I thought it needed to be full fat right? Or am I wrong??
IT had 9 carbs per cup and 0 grams of sugar/ ( it was plain fat free)

Any ideas on where ti find it other than Walmart?

In my opinion, the only problem with anything fat free is that the bump up the flavor by increasing the sugar. I don't think this is ture with Yogurt so just check your label. Yes, full fat is the best as we need the fat, but can you eat it, sure as long as no sugar has been added. I personally love Greek Yogurt and will drive to the other side of town just to get it.

There are two schools of thought with Yogurt. Some count it as 4 carbs per cup, because Drs Eades and ?? advised that when they cultured the milk the carbs were reduced. So folks like me, eat it all the time, but others say thats a bunch of nonsence and count the full 12 grams.

Fage make 3 different fat-content yogurts
Total : 10 grams of fat & 3.2 grams of carbs per 100 grams
Total 2% : 2 grams of fat & 3.8 grams of carbs per 100 grams
Total 0% : 0 grams of fat & 4 grams of carbs per 100 grams - the one you have bought

So the carbs are very similar, (100 grams is about half a cup) but to keep your fat content up see if you can get the higherfat one.

I have never liked yogurt, but always loved the Tzatziki sauce that goes over Greek gyros. I always thought it was made with feta cheese, so I was surprised when I looked for recipes today that it is made with Greek yogurt. Since I have never in my life searched for yogurt, especially the Fage Greek yogurt, I didn't know where to start, so I went to all the websites and didn't see a way to find who sells it in the USA. Is it located with the regular yogurt in the grocery store?

Sunny, the only place that I can find Fage greek yogurt is at Whole Foods. Pricey, too... $2.49 for a 7 ounce container. Really, really awesome though... that's what I have for special occasions. I've never seen any kind of greek yogurt in any of the regular grocery stores where I am... I've looked.

The full fat Greek yogurt tastes way better than the lower fat versions...if you can get it, make the most of it!

We have a Whole Foods in Charlottesville, but for once I don't have any appointments at UVA in Charlottesville until April 11th. With gas at over $3 a gallon, I won't be making the 80 mile plus round-trip before then. I then have several back to back, so I'll have a chance to get some then.

Sunny, there are other "greek" yogurts in the US. Athenos makes it. I can't get Athenos here, but you might.

You can also try asking the manager at your supermarket to stock it. Occasionally, I can buy Fage at the local Giant (although, the full fat variety sells out faster than the others!)

If you like savory yogurt based things, like tzatziki, then use a full fat regular yogurt----you won't be dumping a full cup of the sauce/dip on your food, so the carb count wouldn't be a huge worry, unlike if you ate a full cup with a few berries mixed into it. I prefer yogurt in savory things like marinades, sauces, etc. so I typically don't use the Greek yogurt for that.

We don't have a Giant here, but we do have a store owned by Giant called Martin's. I will try there tomorrow. I'm afraid that the non-Greek yogurt will taste like...well, like yogurt!

If you toss things into it, like grated cucumber, herbs, spices, etc. it will taste like those ingredients plus a sourish tang. My favorite summer salad is mint, cucumber and yogurt---very refreshing and very cooling.

If you use it as a marinade, like the Indians do for tandoori foods, you won't taste the yogurt, but it does tenderize the meat--sorta like buttermilk marinades in southern fried chicken recipes.

But if you are eating it straight with a garnish of fruit, then it will "taste like yogurt".

the brand I got was called Oikos...I got it at Walmart..I tasted it and I agree the FF version def. leaves something to be desired..aka FAT!!

Just wanted to add that my grocery carries a brand called Greek Gods, which is very tasty (5 carbs per half cup). Greek Yogurt is one of my favorite discoveries on Atkins.

Thanks for the heads up, Don. I get greek yogurt at Whole Foods, and they have both Fage and Greek Gods. I've always gotten the Fage, but I will definitely switch now that I know that GG is yummy. It is cheaper.
