There is automatic tagging that will try to create tags based on your title and the context but it is much more accurate if you manually add tags yourself.
Like if you are posting something about keytosis you can add keytosis as a tag tags can contain multiple words ( but needs to be under 25 characters ) one post can have up to 25 tags.
Tags help out for searching.
As you may have noticed the tag cloud which is on http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.com and also under search->tags this allows people to either visually see stuff that they are interested in or quickly do a search based on manually entered keywords rather than a long intensive search based on a database guess of what you are looking for
