  • Does anyone here NOT crave sweets?

Just curious. I crave sweets but a different kind (white potatoes). I just think it's amazing what triggers us. I read all of these posts about people just needing sugar so bad and I thank my lucky stars.

My husband who is not doing Atkins with me, but has to eat what I make is crying because he needed sweets. It was so bad that yesterday he got my Kashi Autumn wheat and was eating it straight out of the box because it had a small amount of sugar in it.

Cakes you'd think would make me go crazy, but nope they don't. Now chocolate chip cookies I love (fresh baked out the oven), but still I can eat 3 cookies and that's it.

But give me some mashed potatoes and it's trouble. I like whole potatoes as well, but those durned mashed are my weakness. Anyone else have a weakness for the salty, crunchy, not sweet treats?

I can honestly say I am not craving carbs. it's day 9 for me, and I have no urge for Pringle's, nachos, Toms Natural Jalapeno flavored chips, or anything pre-atkins. I don't even feel like having beers anymore, which is amazing to me.

I'm not craving them either anymore (thank goodness!). But I do know mashed potatoes and tortilla corn chips are definite weaknesses for me. I have craved mashed potatoes but I make the mock potatoes and that really helps me. They almost taste like mashed potatoes, and the best thing is I won't eat the whole bowl by myself! I'd want some but it doesn't spur me on to want more.

Do a strict induction by DANDR 2002 rules, and you will break those cravings for sure! If you can get through the first week cheat free, you will be well on your way.

No, I don't have those cravings anymore. And, I used to eat a full bag of chips every other day or so.

Once you're past that, Atkins is easy!

        Good luck!

I am generally a fiend for chips and salsa. Last night hubby took me out to dinner, and he had the enchilada plate, which came with a big tray of 'you guessed it.'

I teasingly told him to keep it to his side of the table, but really, I wasn't that worried about it. I had a big salad with chicken... and poured some of the salsa on it, excellent!

Back in induction days, my cravings were for battered/fried food. Actual sweet cravings still show up once a month but I think any other cravings I have now are mostly psychological.

This is my day 7 and I've been craving sweets bad for the last two days. There's no hidden underlying reason that I know of, no stress, nothing like that. I just love them and want some! But I'm hanging in here and won't cave.

I'm also trying to resist the scale. I don't want to weigh until I've completed induction. Don't know if I will make that challenge, but so far I've stayed off of them!

Yup I am doing. But before Atkins I knew these were the triggers. I just eat mashed cauliflower with a legal amount of cream cheese with butter and chives. Tastes really good.

                  Hello Starburst,
I wanted to share this information with you. It's about L-Glutamine, a supplement you can take to get rid of the cravings. Dr. Atkins explains it on page 136 DANDR. I've used it and am a true beleiver in how well it works.
                  Sincerely, Sherri

                  Here's the deal with L-Glutamine.
Take L-glutamine (not glutamic acid). to help control "irresisable" cravings for sweets. Begin with 1 200mg capsul or tablet(I take gel capsule form) three times a day for one week. Then INCREASE the dose to 2 capsuls or tablets three times a day for one week.
After two weeks, if you feel more alert, more inergetic, and have lost your craving for sweets, you can then experiment with the amount of L-glutamine you take until you find the best level for you.

                  This is how L-Glutamine works-
Through nutritional magic and by the use of L-glutamine, a form of glumatic acid which the brain consumes for energy, we can feed the brain and quiet its craving for sweets.
Because L-glutamine can cross the brain barrier easily, and the brain can take it and quickly convert it into glumatic acid, if you take L-glutamine in supplemental form the brain will be able to satisfy its hunger more easily.
Glumatic acid serves primarily as a fuel for the brain's operation and as a buffer against excess amonia.
The relationship of glumatic acid to glucose (blood sugar) goes beyond the brain-fuel interrelationship. Since the brain can store only a small amount of glucose, it is very dependent on the second-to-second supply of blood sugar which may explain dizziness and other nervous symptoms that accompany hypoglycemia (low blood sugar).
The grey matter in the brain converts glumatic acid to a special compound that helps regulate brain cell activity. Thus, a shortage of L-glutamine in the diet, and of glumatic acid in the brain, can result in brain damage due to excess ammonia or a brain that cannot get into "high gear."
The stress of the dieting can lead some people who are not nessesarily fond of alcohol to drink a lot more than usual in an effort to control the stress level they feel.
Also, since alcohol is metabolized very quickly, it is converted to brain fuel, and during your diet your brain can feel hungry and ask for a drink. If you answer it's request and continue to do so you can do more than just wreck your diet program.
Dr. Roger Williams, along with his colleagues at Clayton Foundation for Research at the University of Texas, made the vital discovery that not only did L-glutamine protect against poisonous effects of alcohol, it also controlled or stopped completely the craving for it.
L-glutamine is a versitile amino acid that can contribute to your diet program if, on your way to your best weight level, you suffer from any of these problems described.
L-Glutamine is an excellent supplement to curb the cravings for sweetness and alcohol.

I'm with your husband, I tend to crave sweets! A friend of mine tried South Beach recently and lost it after two days because she HAD to have mashed potatoes. Everyone has their vice I guess!

I could have written your post before I began. I was a SLAVE to potatoes and pasta. i LOVED it and ate it all the time. I stuck through a clean induction and I honestly can tell you I have NO cravings. Try experimenting with the Cauliflower potato esq recipes. I use cauliflower and whip with with cream and butter and I also add cheese and bacon and make like a twice baked potato fillling. Oh and the cauliflower casserole (Like hashbrown casserole) and Cauliflower potato salad is terrible tasy. i actually prefer the cauliflower salad over regular potato salad!!! and I've brought it to three potluck and had it DEVOURED.

Stay true you will change...give you body time. But there is total hope, from one spud love to another, Hugs,

Yes I am true to Atkins, so I don't crave. But Pre-Atkins salty crunchy was my weaknesss. It seems like a lot of people Pre-Atkins crave the sweet stuff.

I too am a salty/crunchy craver rather than a sweets craver, so Atkins was fairly easy for me! Celery with cream cheese/pate or cooked chicken skins are great cravings satisfiers.

Yay I'm not alone, that's why the induction is not too bad for me. There have been two parties in my office. They celebrated with a crunch cake the first time, and a strawberry cake the second today. Everyone is like you don't want any?!?

I told them nope. And even if I weren't on Atkins I'd only eat one slice, and a thin one at that.

I'm at the point where I don't crave much of anything anymore. Some days I don't even have my coffee and it doesn't bother me which is weird. I'm also pretty much never hungry ever, also weird.
