  • Whats Up With Cottage Cheese?

I am extending my induction because I need to lose an entire person (135pounds) but what is the deal with cottage cheese? I would happily have cottage cheese and tuna for lunch everyday. I note that it isn;t on the induction list and i am wondering why.
    Thanks

Re: Whats Up With Cottage Cheese?

Good question. Fresh cheeses are not allowed on induction, and I've read somewhere either in the book or on the board is because of the higher carb content. You're only allowed 3-4 ounces of cheese a day, that's 3-4 carbs a day of dairy.

Consider this as you ponder hanging out in Induction longer: OWL rung 1 is more veggies and OWL rung 2 is dairy (including cottage cheese). If you're finding that you wish to have more veggies and dairy, you might think about starting up the rungs of the OWL with more veggies for a few weeks and then gradually add in the dairy after that. There's been plenty of weight loss surprises coupled with exercise as people (me included) have lost more weight during OWL than just on Induction and extended Induction alone. You're choice, but just something to keep in mind

Cool, my ideal would be eggs for breakfast, cottage cheese and lettuce for lunch, and a steak or burger patty for dinner. I could live on that for a long time.

Then moving up the OWL rungs would benefit you if you're wanting changes in your daily foods

If I may ask, roughly how much are you losing a month? I spoke with a DR that recommended Adkins and he said that as long as I stay in induction, I should lose 15 to 20 pounds a month. Is that typical?
          Thanks

For me, roughly, I've lost 1-2 pounds a week. My goal is to lose 5 pounds a month. Anything more is bonus

If you think about it, losing 15-20 pounds right now would be roughly about 3-4 pounds a week at your weight. In my opinion (since the doctor has a degree backing up his ) that would be safest and most attainable. But you also need to consider what you want in your daily foods. If you think you want more veggies, add them. They're just more fiber and vitamins to your daily diet.

Your body will fluctuate each week going from losing 3-5 pounds depending on what you're eating and your activity level. Mine was really high last month with what I was eating and jogging, so I lost a lot more last month. I also had weeks where I didn't lose and then lost a lot. A sinus cold slowed me down this month (my students love sharing!). But that's okay, too, because I need skin to shrink, as well

Slow and steady not only builds character to your way of eating for life, but it also helps your body adjust

              Hope that helps.

Thanks for that. I know that I need to ramp up my excercise too. was just hoping to have cottage cheese. But no pain no gain (or loss in this case).
                Thanks

Re: Whats Up With Cottage Cheese?

I've been doing Atkins since 2002. Cottage cheese was allowed on induction in some of the earlier books. I forget which one was the last one that allowed it...I'll have to go look it up. It's the version I've always used (though I own them all) and I lost just fine on induction using cottage cheese.

ETA: I think it might be the 1992 version.

I would suggest trying cottage cheese 1-2 a week and see how it affects you. I have it every now and then without any halt in weight loss.

The earlier Atkins did allow cottage cheese, but then in those books if I recall correctly (dont have a copy of the old book at work) induction was only for one week then you were expected to move on and start adding more carbs (similar to OWL but not so structured) not extend your induction at all.

Move to OWL and see what happens - you can always stay on the dairy rung for a while if all you miss foodwise is cottage cheese! Then once you miss nuts and berries you can move on to those two rungs.

Re: Whats Up With Cottage Cheese?

While I was on induction, I wondered about the cottage cheese and ricotta cheese too but when I got to the dairy rung, I discovered that I didn't really miss them as much as I thought I did. I ate both that first week on rung 2, but haven't had any since. I apparently lost my taste for them. Strange, huh?

What I really liked was the addition of more veggies on rung 1 because I'm a veggie lover and they satisfy me more than the dairy does. The only dairy I eat now is a splash of milk in my tea occasionally.

I also found that I stalled on extended induction but started losing again when I moved to rung 1. I can't figure that out either but that's what happened. I would suggest that you try moving up to rung 1 and 2 and see what happens. You can always go back to induction if you wish.

I think this may have been true in the older versions, but the 1992 version is actually quite similar to the 2002 version, except in how they count fiber, sugar alcohols, etc. in the carbs.

Some of the terminology hadn't come into use yet (I don't think they called it a CCL yet) but induction was for two weeks, and the steps were structured by this version. This is actually the version I use, and I love it!
