  • Metabolic changes of a cheat

    Hello my fellow ADBBer's
I crashed and burned this week due to a deceptive ingredient list. Of course when I fell out of ketosis I also had a peice of pizza and some ice cream... I gained 7 pounds back. I felt defeated and dissapointed in myself. I almost went off the plan.....old habits and thoughts that led to this weight gain started to surface....a dangerous thing! The power of that little weight gain almost undid everything I have accomplished.

I did some research and there is a substance our liver produces and stores called Glycogen. Our liver will take one molecule of carbohydrate and attach 4 molecules of water. When we go on Low carb/Induction we quickly use up the Glycogen for energy and then shed the water resulting in large amounts of weight loss in the first week. However the opposite is true when we eat off the No No list. Our liver pulls in the carbs to produce Glycogen and we end up gaining large amounts in a matter of days. The same weight we lost in that first week. It can be 4-10 pounds!
Knowledge is power! Remember if you cheat or accidently eat off plan this terrible bloating weight gain is water and once back on plan you will shed it quickly....usually within a week. Hang in there people and step away from that plate of disaster!

    Wait... I'm a little confused.

Let's say I'm doing Induction, for simplicity's sake. I'm averaging, oh, 17 net carbs/day. You're saying if I eat *anything* off the list for induction - even if it's allowed later, like 2 tsp of peanuts (3.4 carbs) this'll happen as a result?

Or is it something that happens only when you get knocked out of ketosis?

'No Nos' aren't healthy foods like nuts. 'No nos' are things like sugar and nutrient empty white flour, etc.

Ah, ok... that makes it clearer.

        Thanks!

That amount might not "knock you out of ketosis", but it might hinder your weight loss if you have a CCLL of 20.

I'm in week 1 of OWL and I'm praying that isn't the case.

The First Rung of OWL is an additional 5 net carbs of Induction veggies, not peanut butter. As the OWL moderator, I can tell you that the 2 most troublesome food rungs are nuts/seeds and grains because these foods are associated with the most food intolerances/allergies. Even in the general population, nuts and grains are in the top 6 causes of food allergies.

We have had some OWLers discover that they have food intolerances to nuts, peanuts, and soy eventhough they ate these foods in the past. So don't sneak foods not appropriate for your Phase of OWL----because what if that 2 teaspoons of peanut butter messes you up during Rung 1? You might think that it was the 5 additional net carbs of veg doing it and not the peanutbutter and then you'll crawl back to Induction level carbs and the foods list falsely believing that you have a very low CCLL.

Yes, I know - I'm trying to find the veggies I can add 5 additional grams with while not gorging myself - I'm finding it tricky and I haven't really made it yet (experiment, experiment).

My question above was completely theoretical.

Now, that heavy whipped cream goodie DH made last night - yes, that was a cheat for this stage of the game.

Sorry for the temporary set-back, Razzle ... but, natch, the emphasis is on temporary, so be of good cheer! And thank you for the valuable information ... sorry you had to be our "lab rat," though

This really helped explain things. I gained 4 pounds this weekend!!!!! The only thing different was we went to Logans and I ate peanuts. I am wondering if that is what set me back. I am not on the nut rung yet.

Only other thing is I was very depressed over the weekend. My husband left on Thurs to go hunting with his buddies. Maybe stress also?

Re: Metabolic changes of a cheat

Sorry gang! The NO NO's were sugar and simple carbohydrates or foods that were not on Dr. Atkins ok list for whatever rung you are on.
Debie- I dont know if it is the peanuts, stress or maybe TOM? Hang in there girlfriend..it will disappear! Hope DH is back soon.

Whatever it is, we have to remind ourselves that it takes 3500 (I think....am I right?)calories to make one pound of fat and so unless we have eaten 14000 calories over what we burn daily we can be assured it is water weight and we can shed it as quickly as it came.

I think maybe I need to post the above on my bathroom mirror to remind myself. I am the biggest offender of letting the scale rule my head.

Isn't the veggie skewer from logan's sooooo good! I think it's ok to eat the peanuts because their bread is sometimes hard to resist.

I used to work at the Logan's here in town and what would keep me away from the bread was to see it being made in the back. The ladies would mix all the ingredients, cut it into peices and let it sit on the trays for hours. All day I would watch the bread rise and grow really puffy! I would picture that happening to my body if ate the bread- puffing up just like the bread.

I was glad to see that because I can resist that bread. The peanunts on the other hand are a little harder, especially because they are right on the table!!

                        Yummers!

I guess it had to be stress more so since its impossible for TOM

I had two of the veggie skewers and the Logans Steak. I really love that place.
