  • Not New, Just Returning

So I started Atkins in August. My goal was to be down 30 lbs by Halloween. Here I am, less than a week to go and I have lost 5 lbs. The original 5 lbs I lost on Induction.

I originally lost 15 lbs and then about a month ago, ended the up with problems from low blood sugar. They think a combination of my Atkins eating and medication for PCOS may have caused the problems. I spent the last month trying to figure out what combination of diet/exercise/medication would get me through my PCOS. My Dr pretty much forbade me from Atkins for the time being. However, I went back to him with it on Friday and told him that since I stopped eating the Atkins way of life, I have been so tired and just felt like crap A LOT....

    I CONVINCED HIM!!!!!

I am back to Atkins starting today!!!!!
I am so excited because I know it works and I was so upset that I couldn't live this way anymore.

While I was gone I still worked out 6 days a week and still ate more toward the low carb way, but didn't lose ANY weight

TGFA (Thank God for Atkins) I'M BACK!!!!!
    Have a Beautiful Day

Might I ask what medication you are taking? I have PCOS as well and I'm taking Metformin 1,000 mg per day. How did you know you have low blood sugar? Did you take a test?

        Re: Not New, Just Returning

I take Metformin as well. Normally it is fine and in fact my Dr recommends the combo of Atkins with Metformin for weight loss and keeping IR in check. My problem is that pre-PCOS I tended more toward hypoglycemia than hyperglycemia. That w/ the combo of a drug that is designed to keep your blood sugar levels from going too high with a low glycemic diet and weight loss, made me go further toward Hypoglycemia QUICKLY... I started the diet in July, and started Metformin 2 weeks later. My weight loss was too quick for my med/diet combo. I now take a higher dose of Metformin, because while it helped to keep my IR in check, it hasn't regulated my other PCOS problems like it should have. I am okay with the hypoglycemia now. My body is used to the lower levels, and it is just so important for me to include a protein low GI carb and fat in EVERY meal and snack....

Oh and I knew I was suffering from low blood sugar because I was getting super light headed, had a headache and got shaky/jittery. I ate a sugar packet, and immediately felt better (in not even 5 minutes)

The carbs I choose on Atkins are low glycemic carbs. I also have a food handy that is higher on the GI scale just in case... But I know how crappy I felt when I stopped Atkins, and I know that I am safe to have those things in the house. AND, it is a healthier item and just a little bit of it, hid away. I hardly ever think about it unless I start to feel jittery.... Usually I use carrots or a date or two... They are pretty up there on the GI list and help quickly... (even higher than potatoes, but don't trigger my carb cravings like a potato would)

Hopefully you'll be off all the meds soon! Try eating more frequently to keep your blood sugar up. Welcome back!
