  • 2 weeks into Atkins and ... Need some advice.

    Hello all!

I've been on Atkins for about 2 weeks now and have lost around 11.5 pounds. I weighed about 239 pounds before Atkins and my goal weight is about 165 pounds. I would like to seek the advice of fellow Atkins Diet users please. My weight has been steadily dropping during those 2 weeks but as of 3 days ago, the weight loss stopped. In fact I gained 0.6 pounds the very next day. My weight has now stayed the same for the next 3 days. During those 3 days, I drank 1 bottle (1.5litres) of Oolong Tea each day. I remember reading somewhere that the sodium in Oolong tea will cause water retention and I'm hoping that my weight gain of 0.6 pounds is due to the Oolong Tea that I've been drinking. This is because by the time I finish drinking an entire bottle of Oolong tea, I do not drink much plain water anymore. The good news is I stopped drinking the Oolong tea last night and my weight dropped by 1.1 pounds when I weighed myself this morning. Any tips/recommendations for me? Do I have any cause for worry or am I just thinking too much?

And finally, I have been taking about 3 slices of Honey Baked Ham each and about 12.5g of Cheddar Cheese for Breakfast and Lunch daily. Is this diet acceptable? I remember doing a search and Honey Baked Ham seems ok though it's a little more pricey compared to the other hams. It also tastes nicer.

For dinner, I'll usually eat what's being cooked minus the obvious carbs like rice and potatoes. Btw, I'm Singaporean ...

    Cheers.

Yes I do take vegetables but mostly during dinner considering I'm packing my lunch to work.

I am in the midst of reading the book ... only at chp 5.

      Thanks for the reply.

It is normal to see some weight fluctuation - it could be salt, it could be hormones it could be "who knows". So don't get surprised when that happens and it will happen again. Not sure what effect the tea could have.
Ham is often cured with sugar or honey - you have to check the label if it has any sugar products in it you should not be eating it.
You have to drink water though. Lots of it. Water is your friend on Atkins.
        Good job with your losses!!!!

Do what i did. Put your scale high up in the closet. I was becoming obsessive with weighing myself for the first six weeks. Now I only weigh myself every two weeks. I am much happier and a lot more calm since I adopted this philosophy. Just let go and be happy with the lifestyle change. Welcome to the board. Good luck and Happy New Year!

Definitely do not get hung up on weighing daily. I look at my weight loss over the month for the "true" measure!! And of course, those very important inches!

                Keep with the book!!

                Good luck!

I agree with Rob about putting the scale away! Also I would suggest that you take your measurements. I remeasure once a month & keep track of the inches lost. Very exciting to see that number!

Good luck on your journey! I'm glad you are reading the book!

Re: 2 weeks into Atkins and ... Need some advice.

I agree with all the advice here. Whatever you do KEEP READING THE BOOK. That is the number one reason why most new people fail; because they want to get it over with and get to the "meat" of the program , so to speak but don't realize most all of the basic questions are answered by reading the book. And yeah, it can be a bit wordy and boring in spots but plug on! Dr. A says you should not eat vegetables only at a main meal. Dr. A says you should make sure you spread it out between meals so that you don't have spikes in blood sugar, which can happen if you do that and can make you hungry. And it is so true the scale is not you friend sometimes. On the advice of other Atkiner's here, during my induction I refused to even look at the scale until I was on my 14th day, so that I could really guage how much the program was working, that I wouldn't go nuts at ever flux up or down, and so I could be surprised! The scale also can reflect a gain or loss but not inches, which is very important, too. You can be stuck for a week at one weight but find out with a tape measure that you are still losing inches. Good luck and make sure that you are reading the book as careful as you can!
