  • Food Scale, What type to invest in?

I am looking on walmart and walgreens websites at food scales..........

What type do each of you use? I am tired of eyeballing stuff and I had one the first time I did Atkins in 2003.

Please advise as I am looking to purchase one today..........

I have 2, both digital, both weigh in grams and ounces and one goes up to 3 pounds and one up to 5. They are no name ebay specials, and the only feature I would look for is that they use regular batteries unless you live in an area were those new fangled(geez i sound like my parents) round disc batteries are easy to come by.
Be sur the readout is far enough away from the area you place the food so you can read it without a plate or bowl covering the numbers (ask me how I know)

I spent $20 at Walmart on a cheapie and it's lasted me the better part of 4 years. I don't think it's something you have to invest a fortune in. Chicklady gives solid advice, and mine fits that bill for $19.99

Like chicklady and brooke i've just got a cheapie...it was on sale for about $10 at my grocery store. Mine weighs in lbs, kg's, g's and ozs and is digital. It does take watch batteries (the newfangled ones chicklady was talking about LOL!), but i can easily find them at the dollar store here and they last a couple of years with regular use. I've had my scale about 3+years now and can't live w/o it.

another really handy feature mine has and not sure if it's standard, you can put a plate/container on it empty, and reset it back to zero so you can then put food on it without worrying that it's weighing the dish as well. I use this all the time.

Yeah, the "tare" feature, to reset to zero is also good if you have several things to weigh for a single recipe. Now someone tell me why it's called tare?

                  Thanks everyone!!

I was wondering about the cheaper ones because on Wal-Mart site, the product reviews range from one end of the sprectrum way to the other side and hardly anything in between...............

I don't have a lot of money to spend as I am spending all my $$$ in food these days,

I just ordered myself a new Tanita scale to weigh myself on!!

I have the Tanita scale and it's great. I've had it for about seven years!

I bought the salter digital back lit kitchen scale which weighs in both gs and oz and also weighs fluids. It's great.

Re: Food Scale, What type to invest in?

I have had a regular food scale for close to 20 years, for which I paid $10. It works very well, but I needed something better (digital). I checked out the ones that Wal-Mart sells and decided they were not a bargain.

I went to Target and got a Chefmate for $29 that I love. It comes with a book of codes and after weighing in ounces or grams, you plug in the food code and it gives you all the nutrition facts. For foods that doesn't have a code already, you can program those in.

By the way, I really couldn't get on with a non digital scale. It just isn't accurate enough and every gram counts!

I've got some that give the breakdown of food and these are really coming into their own.

They list the calories, fat, fibre, carbs and even NET CARBS yeah!

I think mine cost about £70.00 - probably much cheaper the USA - guessing half the price if everything else is to go by.

I best not get on my rant about the cost of living in the UK (oh please someone give me a Green Card!)

I just find they make life really easy - the foods are pre-programmed, plus it has a memory, so you weigh it, add it... and then at the end of the day, it adds up the totals for you.
