  • Five Myths About Drinking Water

I just read an article on NPR.org titled "Five Myths About Drinking Water". I know it's not BS because NPR has nothing to gain or lose if people drink lots of water.

I have always suspected that the 8 glasses a day of water was bunk, an urban legend.

there are a lot of things that the article didn't cover with regards to drinking water- i think they have over simplified it- haven't really pinpointed anything. I drink a lot of water, makes me feel good- I crave it. I also have a headache if I don't have enough.

Everyone's body is different. I can immediately tell when I don't get enough water. For me, being hydrated makes me feel better physically and mentally.

Also remember we eat a special diet that require kidneys to constantly do what Atkins calls ketosis or lipolysis. Water may just be an important ingredient here that whoever they talked to there did not take into account.
I know I lose better with water for whatever reason. I am on my second bottle this morning (So bite me )

I definitely lose better the more water I drink.... cold water, I mean. I think it's because it takes more energy than we realise to heat the cold water to body temperature and that's what causes the extra loss.

In addition to what liv wrote, lipolysis/ketosis is a diuretic. So we actually lose more water than the person who isn't on Atkins.

Not buying into this. I'll continue drinking 96 oz of H20 simply based on how I fee. & the words of Dr. Atkins & Jonny Bowden.

Regardless of what NPR says I believe water helps keep my body hydrated and working properly on a daily basis. If you choose not to believe that 64 oz a day is a good thing then you probably aren't fully believing in this WOE completely and might be looking for reasons to fail....just my opinion.

I know it's not BS because NPR has nothing to gain or lose if people drink lots of water.
Just because they have nothing to gain or lose does not make gospel of what they choose to publish. Do you think they check out each and every source before publishing an article? Nope!

If they publish articles about how bad low carb is for you, does that make it true?

If they publish articles about how Dr. Atkins died from heart disease and was morbidly obese, does that make it true?

                  Didn't think so.

Many people on here, when they get in a stall, will ask for tips to help them lose, and many of them do not start losing again until they start downing the water.

The comment about diet sodas being as good for weight loss as pure water is pure bunk. There are long-term medical studies that make a lie out of that one.
People who say it can't be done, should not interrupt those doing it.

Re: Five Myths About Drinking Water

The amount of water I take in has very obvious effects on my body.
                    1. My hands show the effects the most. They look older and my skins doesn't bounce right back when pinched if I drink too little water. Increase the water and quickly they appear nice and smooth.
                    2. My mouth is dry with too little water.
                    3. I feel overheated with too little water.
                    4. Not beneficial for skin appearance??? Hah! My skin looks and feels much better with increased water intake.

If a doctor tried to give me these lines I would tell him he was full of c**p. My body knows better. I swear my faith in doctors dies a little every day.

To say its "bunk" or an "urban legend" is ignorant. I have been on this diet 5 months and lost 82 lbs so far. I went on a cruise 3 months back and was not drinking as much water. When I returned home found I had gained about 12 pounds back. I started drinking my water again and the 12 pounds was gone within a week. NPR is not the best source for the truth.

How many times have authorities flipflopped on medical advice--the Atkins WOE being a major example. I don't believe anything I read anymore. At this stage I choose to go with my own experience and for me, I feel better when I drink lots of water. My skin is nicer, I lose weight faster, and I am less hungry. Reasons enough for me.

It's not about the results. Its about the process.

Re: Five Myths About Drinking Water

One doctor can comment and a whole article is dedicated to his ONE opinion? The fact is, most people are dehydrated...and chronic dehydration (over the course of years) is now being linked to Alzheimer's. That's ONE reason that people need to drink more water.
The body uses water to carry out processes in the body, ketosis and lipolysis are two of them. All the activity in the brain...glucose. What's the main ingredient in glucose? Water. What about hormones? Main ingredient: water! Your skin? Main ingredient: Water. Breathing? Well, water doesn't help you breathe, but you breathe off about 1 liter of water a day...more with exercise. That's what keeps you from having a dry mouth all day. Amazing......
So how do you get water do do all these things? You drink it...a LOT of it. If you don't drink it, you don't get it, and your body doesn't function well. Just google "Water intake and brain activity" and see what kind of research you find.

64oz is bull? Okay, it probably is! Some people need even more.

This reminds me of an article that was on Yahoo several months ago where the big wigs at Coca-Cola were basically saying that it's okay if your water quota comes from soda because water is water.

That's absurd to me. Nothing replaces water in it's natural state.

I also read an article...I'll find it if I can...where it said that your body uses water to remove caffeine from the body. SO, when you drink that cup of coffee or can of Coke, you get 1/2 of the liquid that's actually inside of the can to use for hydrating your body. The other half goes toward removing the caffeine.

Know what REALLY works well for hydrating yourself? Dehydrated water! No lie! It's in the bottom of every glass at your house, and it never runs out. Just add water!
