  • question about protein

I'm a 5' 10" male, 36 yrs old. Doing a kind of extended induction where i keep the carbs to about 25 gm a day, exercising, and taking supplements. I've gone from 220 on jan 1 to about 192 as of yesterday, so theres no doubt the diet is working for me but I have cause to question my protein intake and im looking for guidance from some of the more experienced Atkins dieters...

For the last couple weeks, the breath has gotten terrible. I suspect I'm eating too much protein relative to fat. When i was at 65% fat, I didnt have breath issues (according to my vegetarian girlfriend). My fitday link is below:

FitDay Free Calorie Counter and Diet Journal:*Public Journal

I've tried to keep the fat at 65% in the beginning and recently its been more like 55% of my diet.

On average i do an hour of cardio every day- and im burning approximately 600-700 calories in a 1 hour workout. The goal of my exercise and nutrition plan is weight loss without loss of muscle mass. I know Atkins is not about counting calories, so I include this information only in case it justifies a higher than normal protein intake. The time frame for my 175 lb goal weight by 3/30 is ambitious, some would say unhealthy. Thats fine. I wont get defensive about it.

Given my exercise regimen, am I taking in the right amount of protein, or is it too much? Whats a good fat to protein ratio for an extended induction with a daily exercise regimen?

    Thanks in advance Atkins Gurus!

    Re: question about protein

I don't think it is the protein. I think your exercise routine is causing you to release ketones in your breath. Besides urine, we release ketones in sweat and exhaled breathing. This is why the Ketostix might show a lighter color after strenuous exercise. You have burned a lot of ketones for energy and the byproducts leave the body in urine, sweat and your breath.

You might need to drink a lot more water since you exercise so much. Dehydration is another big reason for bad breath. If you have a dry mouth, saliva can't kill the bacteria in your mouth.
People who say it can't be done, should not interrupt those doing it.

Hiya! Thanks for responding. i dont think ketones are to blame a) because when i was in my deepest ketosis in the beginning I had no breath issues and b) my significant claims she cannot smell anything when i breathe through my nose.

try acidofolis pills... this worked for me.. it is like the good live bacteria found in yogurt but in capsil form... try to get the ones that are refrigerated as this keeps the bacteria alive longer.
