  • Atkins Advantage Diet and Kidney Disease

I hope I'm not breaking any rules by posting this but there's a thread in another forum that really got me angry. I posted on it but I'd really like some reinforcements. It's on the QVC website. Go to community and then viewpoints. It's titled "Atkins Advantage Diet and Kidney Disease"
    Thanks

    Here's the link.

Here's what Dr. Atkins says about kidney disease and/or function.

On page 107 of DANDR 2002, Dr. Atkins says "People with severe kidney disease (creatinine over 2.4) should not do any phase of Atkins unless ordered to do so by their physician."

On page 96 of DANDR 2002, Dr. Atkins says "In other studies, it has been shown that bone health was not compromised and that renal (kidney) function was found to be stable on controlled carbohydrate diets."

When remarking on "Before and After Tests" on page 111 of DANDR 2002, Dr. Atkins says "Your kidney and liver functions should also be excellent."

Moral of the story: Someone with existing severe kidney disease should not do any phase of Atkins without his/her doctor's consent. Eating a controlled carbohydrate diet does not cause kidney disease.

    ------------------------

The person who originally posted said "I've been doing the 1st section of the diet since I started, but I've now started on phase two...just to have more carbs and less fat and meat."

During OWL carbohydrate intake does increase which means, percentage wise, fat and/or protein levels will have to decrease, but it's not that dramatic. It's hard to say whether or not this person is following Atkins as it is laid out in DANDR 2002.

    -------------------------

A couple posters mentioned that a low carb diet was a high protein diet. That's simply not true. They are misinformed. When we follow Atkins as Dr. Atkins created it we are eating a high fat diet - proportionally. Typically, 35% or less of calorie intake comes from protein on Atkins. I would venture to say that 35% is not that much higher (or not higher at all) than other eating plans. In other words, it's pretty normal.

Yes, I commented that allot of folks weren't doing it right and then when they got sick they blamed it on Atkins. That one person even commented that Atkins was a no carb diet. Geez.
I was getting attacked so much I decided to leave it.
      The last person posted this:

"Since when are fruits and veggies the enemy? Where do you get fiber on Atkins? How about all the saturated fat on Atkins?
      How is that healthy????

I wish people who didn't know what they are talking about would stop attacking people who DO."

Good work on trying though. A lot of people have opinions about Atkins but has no clue about what it is. It is a bummer but what can you do

Sometimes (but not that often) it even happens on here. Oh well.

Unfortunately these narrow minded people will always believe what they wish and never listen to what those of us who know better say. My latest standard response is "well, you may think what you know what Atkins is about, but I know better. If you ever feel like finding out what Atkins is REALLY about then let me know!" There is nothing for them to argue about and it puts them on notice that you know that they don't really know. In the meantime, you will keep looking thinner and healthier and that speaks volumes.

            Hi Jill,
Some folks were extremely rude to me on that forum. Wish I had more backup. I finally decided to leave it alone.
This was the last post from someone this morning:
"After losing my right kidney, my Urologist said not to go near any low carb/no carb diets ever again. Said it would be too hard on my remaining kidney. Thankfully my left kidney is fine and dandy and working like a champ.

I really don't understand why some posters are getting snarky about the Atkins diet and defending it to the ground and "suggesting we do more research" on this.. Umm no, we live with kidney issues each and every day. I bet many of us have done way more research than those defending atkins. I bet many of us have teams of Urologists and Nephs working with us to keep our kidneys healthy.

This (or these) types of diets may work for many but do not work for those with kidney issues."

Re: Atkins Advantage Diet and Kidney Disease

I stopped defending Atkins years ago, if people make a comment to me about my diet I simply tell them what I put in my mouth is none of their business.
