hello all. i am new to atkins and i am wondering if my prescribed medications will hinder my progress? i currently take lasix(to remove excess water), potasium(to replenish from the water loss), and glucophage. for those who do not know glucophage is primarily a diabetic medicine to regulate the production of insulin. as we know over production of insulin may lead to weight gain. though i am not diabetic by far my doctor says he has had a lot of success giving this to his patients for weightloss. my question is does anyone know if this will hinder my progress with atkins or will i have to do modifications to the plan? he has told me while i take the glucophage to watch my carb intake. he says eating carbs will slow or even stop the glucophage's potential. so in other words eating carbs will cancell out taking the glucophage. has anyone else ever used the glucophage/atkins combination? and if so how were your results? thanks so much for any feedback.---sam

Re: atkins and prescribed medications
Since you are taking those medications, you really need to get your doctor on board with you during your weight loss. He/she will need to monitor you closely so that your medications can be adjusted accordingly.Originally posted by SThomas3791 View Posthello all. i am new to atkins and i am wondering if my prescribed medications will hinder my progress? i currently take lasix(to remove excess water), potasium(to replenish from the water loss), and glucophage. for those who do not know glucophage is primarily a diabetic medicine to regulate the production of insulin. as we know over production of insulin may lead to weight gain. though i am not diabetic by far my doctor says he has had a lot of success giving this to his patients for weightloss. my question is does anyone know if this will hinder my progress with atkins or will i have to do modifications to the plan? he has told me while i take the glucophage to watch my carb intake. he says eating carbs will slow or even stop the glucophage's potential. so in other words eating carbs will cancell out taking the glucophage. has anyone else ever used the glucophage/atkins combination? and if so how were your results? thanks so much for any feedback.---sam

Re: atkins and prescribed medications
I agree with Megs. I started pre-Atkins as a diabetic with lots of meds. Throughout the period of doing Atkins, I kept a dialogue with my physician about my progress and we made changes in my meds including oral diabetic agents, insulin, diuretics, blood pressure meds, etc.. Happily, with weight loss, my need for diabetic medication changed dramatically. Now I take nothing for diabetes, so it can happen if you work the plan as it is written.
