  • Pickles???

I just started yesterday and have been eating:
Breakfast: 4 scrambled eggs, 3 pieces of bacon and 4 ounces of venison breakfast sausage
Lunch: Half a package of fatfree turkey breast and 3 chucke cheese string cheese packages
Dinner: 2 seasoned chicken leg quarters and a whole dill pickle.

I'm always in a truck and have hard times stopping to snack or eat. I love pickles, and the ones I got said 0 carbs. Would I be able to snack on these throughout day (lets say 3-4 whole pickles a day)?

Good question, I'll let someone else answer that...however, I would assume that you would end up with a lot of sodium with that...maybe drink extra water??

still not understanding the whole process about carbs and sodium. I've just honestly been making sure I'm not eating hardly any carbs. What would high sodium do? Don't know!!!

just makes you retain water (bloat up) and too sodium (salt) is just really not very good for you is all.

            Re: Pickles???

The pickles that you have that say 0 carbs are for the one serving..if you eat more than that, they will have some carbs...they can legally say 0 carbs because it is .5 or less gram carb. So more than one might start adding up. Make sure to use a carb counter like fitday or something similar. Since they are made from cucumbers and cukes have carbs...its likely that your pickles do too.

              Re: Pickles???

As Sonya said, as they are basically cucumbers then they must have 'some' carbs in them
Though there is nothing wrong in using them as a part of your 3 cups of veggies I would hesitate to make them all the veg you eat, as relying on just one measn you will be missing out on so many other nutrients.
              I notice you wrote
I've just honestly been making sure I'm not eating hardly any carbs.
contrary to the media's notion of Atkins it is NOT a 'no carb' way of eating

You can eat up to 20 net carbs which are to come from up to 3 cups of veggies from the two lists, plus the carbs from cheese (count one net carb per ounce)/eggs (about 0.6 per egg/cream/processed meats (if you allow yourself these)/salad dressings etc. )

However 'most' of your carbs should come from your veg, so if you eat very few of those you should not be eating many carbs from the other foods I listed, which will limit your food choices just to meat and might get boring after a while.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

What about Pickled jalepenos? The jar says zero carbs but there probably is a couple carbs in them. Thoughts????

                  Re: Pickles???

You really need to be careful about the sodium. Not only does it make you retain fluid, but it can make you really thirsty.
This actually happened to me. I started eating bacon on my salads, and probably some other things with sodium (forget what). And I was so so thirsty I could have cried, no matter how much water I drank I was ALWAYS thirsty. It took about 1 week- 1 1/2 to get it out of my body, no joke. This time around (yes I started again). I eat absolutely no bacon, because of what it does to me, and so far so good

                    Re: Pickles???

My thoughts are if it's not on the list, I don't eat it. Pickles aren't on my list, so I don't eat them. Jalepeno's aren't on my list, so I don't eat them.

Of course it helps that I don't particularly enjoy pickles and jalapeno's...but I digress.

There's plenty of time after induction to try those things out and see how they affect you.

If you're always in a truck, you need to plan ahead with your meals in a cooler. Plus - after you open those jars of pickled foods, they need to be refrigerated.

WetBanana, pickles are just cucumbers (like Elizellen said) and jalapenos are peppers, so enjoy! I made these last weekend (except I used colby instead of cream cheese) Linda's Low Carb Menus & Recipes. They would keep pretty well in a cooler.

                        Re: Pickles???

I guess what I'd be more worried about is the pickling process - the added sodium wouldn't be the greatest thing - especially for somebody like me who gets severe Edema while pregnant, and sometimes it overflows to when I'm not pregnant now that I have a tendency towards it.

I DO realize that pickles are cucumbers and jalepeno's are peppers...

Though I have heard of reduced sodium pickles, but again, like I said - I don't need to worry about it because I don't particularly enjoy pickled vegetables.

Cucumbers are on the list; pickles are cucumbers. Peppers are on the list; jalepenos are peppers.

Otherwise the poor British would not eat zucchini because courgettes are not on the list. Or they wouldn't eat eggplant because aubergines are not on the list.

And no one would eat mayo, because mayo is not on the list although the ingredients in mayo are.

As Elizellen said, pickles are perfectly acceptable during all phases of Atkins. Just check on the label that they are not pickled with sugar.

If they are not pickled with some sugar, they are okay to have. The carbs are below 0.5 g per serving, so they are allowed to write zero on the label. I would count 0.5 g per serving.

I wondered what Courgettes were - I just thought it was a fancy way of cooking something (it was on the induction menu and I was curious).
