  • UGH! That Belly!

    Hi you guys:

Some of you will not have a clue what I am talking about & some you will find a kindred spirit.

So here is my problem. I have a belly....but not just any belly - the kind that keeps shaking long after you've stopped moving!

Even though my upper body seems to be shedding weight - my enormous 'ring of saturn' seems to be an immovable object in its very own space & time continuum.

My husband who (don't you just hate it) wants to lose only 15 lbs and eats like a bull has been on my back that I need to do sit-ups and stuff that 'moves my belly'.

Turns out that just swimming is not enough. Smirk..smirk...

So I turn to all you knowledgeable fellow Atkinites....I still have another 87 lbs to lose....should I start working on 'the belly' now or somewhere down the road & what should I do?

    Thanks!!!
    Starting weight: 275 lbs
    11/03/09: 214.8
    Minigoal 1 : 220 lbs - Met 08/25/09
    Minigoal 2: 215 lbs - Met 10/10/09
    Minigoal 3: 210 lbs
    Minigoal 4: 205 lbs
    Minigoal 5: 200 lbs
    Final goal: 135 lbs

I just love posts with the phrase "space time continuum" in them

I vote for working it now. Not because it will help with the jigglies but when the fat moves (and it will move) you will have nice firm muscles showing up. Nice firm muscles takes quite a while to build up. Personally I hate abs work but I do them more or less faithfully

        Re: UGH! That Belly!

I ride a stationary bike 25 miles a day, do the 30 day shred video and additional ab work every other day.....My stomach is where I carry the biggest part of my weight so I'm working harder on that area than other parts.

The sooner you start the sooner you'll start seeing results on the tape.

From somebody who had a huge belly. Forget situps or abd exercises.Concentrate on losing fat by low carbing. The belly fat will finally come off.You will be suprised with you abds when the weight is gone.Light exercise till your weight is much more manageable.BTW,I am starting to show a six pack now with NO abd exercises. It was there all the time but hidden by fat. Also remember there is a lot of visceral fat that pushes out on abd wall that will go away with wt loss.Patience and still with your diet.

Stacy, my c-section scar and I agree!

I've been on Atkins since February and only started doing ab work for last month's Abs Challenge. I've definitely noticed a difference in tone. My belly fat is still there, but the underneath is truly tightening up.

I'm a swimmer, too. Laps weren't doing much for my belly but as soon as I started taking a cardio water aerobics class, I (and others!) are definitely seeing a difference around my middle!

Bravo -- I agree....that is my c-section scar and I agree.....it's harder once you've had kids to get the tone back so all you can do to help get it back the better it will be. I wish I could just loose weight and have Phil's success...unfortunately after 1 c-section and 2 late term miscarriages the skin is stretched out - it took years before I could do sit ups or any type of ab work without feeling I was tearing my stomach wall again.....of course, you'll do what you want but this is my opinion.

                    Re: UGH! That Belly!

It is pretty much impossible to spot reduce. That's where a lot of people go wrong when they exercise.

Cardio is your answer. Take up jogging (C25K.com is an excellent programme for beginners!). Lifting weights will also mean when you do lose that weight you won't be flabby, you'll start toning underneath the fat and you'll see results faster (and don't be worried about turning muscly and bulky, it takes some serious training to get like that!)
