  • It's about that time

For me to move from extended induction into owl. I started Atkins nearly 6.5 months ago and lost roughly 110 pounds in that time but I still have another 50 pounds or so to loose.

I think I'll finish out this week on extended and then starting Sunday I'll begin climbing up the ladder.

Wow you've done well. 110 pounds - that is quite and achievement.
So on Sunday it will be a bit more veggies on your menu?

Yep, however, I'm wondering if I should skip directly to rung 2. I've already been eating a lot of veggies and quite a bit of salad etc.

The dairy rung scares me a little but then I'm not worried after than until I get a little further down the list into high startch and grains... those were my weaknesses. I've got a while to worry about it though.

        Re: It's about that time

On OWL you need to get used to think in 5 carb amounts. So I would recommend thinking through how much veggies are eating in carbs right now and add 5 additional to it anyways.
Adding 5 carbs can be easy if you work in thins like tomato, onion, spaghetti squash, pumpkin.
Veggie carbs are very safe carbs to start out with.
There are some good items to eat on dairy - like yogurt - the thing to learn again is quantities. 5 carb worth of yogurt is not a lot. But it is an important lesson. We can have carbs but we have to watch the serving sizes.

Kicked off OWL with an extra dose of veggies... Though not a whole lot, I really need to get to the store and stock up.

                  Re: It's about that time

Good luck! I loved moving onto OWL. I have to admit, reaching rung 4 (berries) was the best one. Its been great to see how to introduce more carbs into my menu and get a glimpse of what I can do as I progress up the rungs.

The big thing for me at the Dairy rung was cottage cheese. I eat yogurt sometimes and sometimes add a tablespoon or two of milk to my coffee. Its funny because I used to be a big milk drinker and now, it is almost too sweet for me...I can take it or leave it.

Keep us updated on how OWL is going for you.

                    Thanks!

I've never been much of a milk drinker, though, I do use it in my coffee. That was really my biggest "fault" through induction, but, it never seemed to cause me any trouble. Cottage cheese will be welcomed warmly as will sugar free ice cream

Seriously man, congrats on the loss so far!

I gotta say, i am very impressed, and especially that you did most of that from induction and exteneded....

with owl i did the same thing...

                      good luck! and keep going!

i myself still havent reintro'd ice cream, and really dont plan on, but i do the same with milk (for my coffee) and as long as you are finding what works for you then make it happen man!

                      congrats again !

                        Thanks!

Ice cream would just be for special occasions or when we are out etc. I won't keep it at home, though... too risky even if it's sugar free

There is a grocery downstairs from my office and today I went down and bought a single serving sized bag of California Stir Fry ( which consisted of Broccoli, Snow Peas and a few carrot slices. I've eaten a bit of carrot along the way ( salad) and it's not caused me any issue so i went ahead and ate them ( not many in the bag). I dipped everything in a bit of ranch dressing and it was a pretty good lunch.

My body / mind is saying "Hey, where's the meat?"

                          Re: It's about that time

Just go slowly. I usually add 5 carbs first from the things I have already been eating. If all goes well, the next week I start adding the foods- one at a time so you can identify triggers. Don't worry about stuff you don't eat very often but concentrate on reintroducing the foods that you know will be in your life. There are some great plusses to dairy. I use ricotta to make a number of baked dishes that normally use cream sauces. I just mis ricotta and a beaten egg plus some parmesan. Also, if you lift weights and need a good recovery snack, then getting yogurt back is nice. Sour cream for tex mex and stroganoffs. See? Its not all bad. Do be careful on rung three with the nuts though--lots of folks find that nuts trigger cravings or cause portion control issues. Handle that rung carefully. I think the decision to move up is a sound one though!

It's not about the results. Its about the process.

Thanks for the tips. I LOVE nuts but I've always had to be careful with them because if I'm not I'll empty a can / bag etc in no time.

Big congrats. I just moved to OWL myself this month. I'm trying to journal more, to really get a grip on the numbers. OWL makes me nervous, not sure why - just feel like I'm going to screw it up...so I'm taking it slow

                              Good luck.
