  • New to Atkins Boards - Diabetic Type II

    Hi Everyone,

I did Atkins in 2003 and lost around 35lbs. Unfortunately, I didn't see it through to the end, and gained a lot back (although, not all of it). Since then, I have been diagnosed with Type II Diabetes. My blood sugars were way out of control (between 300 and 400) and my total cholesterol was 287! I decided to try Atkins again 6 weeks ago. My cholesterol is already down to 206! and my blood sugars are now within normal range. My Dr. even cut my medication in half!

Unfortunately, the weight loss has been REALLY slow! I have lost 12lbs in the 6 weeks that I've been doing Atkins (On Induction the whole time). But, my blood sugars and the improvement in my lipids have kept me determined to come off my diabetes medications altogether. I also have around 35lbs more to lose.

I have seen some people here talk about how the diabetes medication does indeed slow weightloss. But it may be slow it will still happen - just not like you remember it probably. And as you improve maybe your doctor will lower it or even if you work it take you off it. In the meantime don't you just low the health effects of this?

Make sure that you stick to the programme. Did you follow the the 2002 book in 2003. It is what we use here. And we really recommend to follow the induction strictly.
Anyways congratulations with all you have accomplished already and welcome!!!!

Hi and welcome back to Atkins --

Regardless of what you did before, or what people are doing now, your body is different than anyone so it’s best not to compare - just follow the plan the way it's written. Look around and find what interests you and join in. Check the STAC Second Time Around Club - Atkins Diet for additional support.

Being Type 2 Diabetic will make your weight loss slower because of the meds, but the weight does come off. Since you've been on induction for 6 weeks it may be time to move to OWL Rung 1 and add 5 additional net carbs of vegetables daily -- it helped keep my weight loss going when I did it. My meds have been changed since I started and my A1C has gone from 10.3 to 5.0 so even though my weight loss has been slow my lab results have been much better so I'm not worried about not loosing quickly.

Get enough pure water in daily (64oz is recommended), exercise and take a non-iron multivitamin.

Check this page for answers to a lot of your questions: http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.com/forums/atkins-diet-14-day-induction/77558-atkins-diet-induction-faqs.html. Make sure you are eating enough vegetables – Atkins isn’t just meat and cheese – vegetables are a huge part of your daily menu and is where most of your carbs should be coming from.

Also ... it might take your body a while to "heal" the metabolic issues you've most likely got going on.

And ... if you don't have much to lose, your rate of loss will be slower.

Along with Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution, you should probably read Dr. Atkins Diabetic Revolution.

        Be patient with your body.

11 years ago, I lost 60 pounds in six months, although not by following Atkins. The lessons I learned throughout that journey include the fact that weight loss can and probably will plateau; weight loss can also be slow to start. Whatever the case, everyone's body chemistry is different, which is why Atkins isn't for everyone. You could lose nothing this week and 6 pounds next week. Fight the good fight and lean on the very knowledgeable members of this board and you will be fine.

Wow... thank you so much for all the replies!

Yes, I have to 2002 Atkins book. I do drink around 100oz of water everyday, but I'm finding it hard to give up my coffee. I am really determined this time. My blood sugars do no go above 140 now. I feel so much better...and as of this morning, I was 170lbs! So that's 15lbs lost!! I really don't mind if it's slow this time... I just want to get healthy.

Thanks again for everything!! It's good to be back!
