hello my name is Manny, well lets get to it. I was going to start this Monday but I realized I wasn’t prepared, my mind was but not everything else. I read most stickys and bought the audio book of the Atkins 2002 revolution that everyone suggest. I have listened to it and I think I’m ready for the 14 day introduction. I will be doing my blood work on sat before I start as the book suggested. So I can compare the difference after I have been on Atkins, I have to admit after I was diagnosed in OCT 2008 I haven’t really monitored so I don’t even know what my levels have been. I have been taking my meds metformin, glipizide isiprol not sure of the dosage I will post later when I check them. well is there anything special that diabetics should do while starting the Atkins that the normal Joe doesn’t do. besides checking in with the doctor to make sure I adjust meds accordingly to weight loss.

Re: hello Type 2 Diabetes. starting on Monday 2-1-10 help preparing
my advice is stick to atkins it will work
and here is a heads up about some things that will happen so you don't get surprized by them
you will go into ketosis and spill ketones this is safe dietary ketosis this happens to everyone its perfectly normal and its not in anyway the deadly Ketoacidosis which is completely different
Ketosis Myths and Facts on the Low-Carbohydrate Diet.
also a creatine level test done on your kidneys to see if they are impaired or not from your type 2 diabetes is recommended
also here is a VERY important tip do not get a cholesterol test done untill you have been on the diet for atleast 6 months
and also know the common total cholesterol test is basically useless and if you get it then chances are your doctor will say you have bad cholesterol even if you have awesome cholesterol
if you want to get a test still in the future wait about 8 months while sticking to the diet and then get a full pannel one that measures all sizes of LDL cholesterol and such
in short the reason is this diet produces the large healthy fluffy LDL that has no health risk but since the common cholestoral test does not show the different types of LDL and just your total LDL they will say you have bad cholestoral even when its great and really a total cholestoral test is a horribley useless thing that drug companies abuse people with to try and put everyone on cholestoral drugs

Your doctor will know about what your sugar levels have been over the past 3 months when they do an A1C -- when I was diagnosed in June of 08 my reading was 10.3 -- when I went to see my endocrinologist just before Christmas my A1C was right at 6.0 so I'm not considered a "diet contolled Type 2 diabetic". I took glyb/metformin twice a day until this past A1C - now I only take Metformin.
The first blood work I had done after I had started Atkins (about 6 months after starting) went up so I was very discouraged but the next one show my triglicerides, cholesterol, and everything thing else was within "normal" levels for the first time in 5 years of being tested. Don't give up just keep going!
I've heard the audio book has some things missing so it may be a good idea to get a hard copy to refer to -- I got a hardbound and paperback copy of the 2002 Dr Atkins New Diet Revolution at www.half.com for under $5.00 including shipping ... look under the "used" sectoin - both of mine were brand new even though they were listed as used.
Good luck -- if you need anything let us know!Carole_____________________May Water 130oz daily

Thanks for the response. Well I got my test done and the doctor’s office called right away and said my levels were out of control which I knew was coming. And he said my cholesterol hasn’t went down. So he suggested for me to go on a pill that is supposed to help with cholesterol and up one of my meds I wasn’t paying attention because I knew I wasn’t going to do it. I just want to see how my levels do right now with my new way of living and if it doesn’t work then maybe try the meds. But I was eating all the wrong things and wasn’t really sticking to a diet that a diabetic should be on. Not sure if I’m right by declining the new meds but I feel that with the weight loss I hope to achieve I will be in good shape or at least better than I was before I started. The doc wants me to test again in 2 months is that too soon or should I wait a little more. I’m on day 4 of induction and I have lost 8 pounds already.

Manny,
2 months may be a little soon to get your numbers down but if you follow the plan the way it's written and stay strict you should have good results by then. My first cholesterol check after starting Atkins my numbers were up, which happens with some people, so if it happens with you don't get upset, the next lab work should be better.
Eat a variety of foods, (check Linda's recipe site it will help keep you from eating the same thing over and over -- http://www.genaw.com/lowcarb/menus.html), make sure you get your veggies in everyday, drink a minimum of 64 ounces of pure water daily (nothing added), and find some type of exercise you like and do it - it's really that easy!
Good luck!Carole_____________________May Water 130oz daily
