  • Introduction/Atkins Bars/Russell Stover, etc.

Are these things NOT allowed on Atkins? I could have sworn the Atkins bars were okay for all phases of Atkins.

Okay, that's rude of me to just pop in and not even introduce myself.

My name is Jamie. I'm 28 years old and Monday will be my 3 weeks anniversary of Atkins. I've tried Atkins in the past, but never with this much determination and willpower. I started at 210 lbs. I'm now at 195. The first 9 days I lost 13 lbs. and since then, I've only lost 2 more pounds. Most of that I'm sure is water weight, but hey, the scale went down!!

Anywho, the 2nd week on Atkins I had TOM, so I attributed that to my lack of loss. But it's been done and over with since Monday and I've still not lost.

My regular menu consists of 2 scrambled eggs with bacon or sausage (no carbs) for breakfast. Lunch is usually a salad with Carb Well Kraft Ranch dressing, or 2 hotdogs with mustard, no bun. Dinner is usually whatever meat I make that night, such as baked chicken or ribs or whatever. I don't add anything to my meat other than Mrs. Dash. No BBQ sauce or ketchu (which is torture, lol).

For a snack, I'll have an Atkins Morning Start bar or a Russell Stover candy (.2 net carbs or so). I lay off of those things normally but when I have TOM, I have to have my chocolate fix.

I'm feeling good about my eating. Getting in my water, I fill up a 64 oz mug twice a day so that's well over my recommended water intake.

Clothes aren't feeling any looser, I don't feel any smaller...

What am I doing wrong???? My ketone strips are the brightest they can be so according to those, I'm in ketosis, but aren't you supposed to lose when your in ketosis???

Any advice?? I'm not cheating, which is soooo hard for me to do. I've actually been very shocked at how good I've been because I normally have zero willpower!!

Any suggestions would be great!!! thx!!!!!!!

the problem is most likely the bars and candies...they are known to cause stalls and cravings...which is part of the "have to have chocolate" thing...you need to fight thru the cravings with induction acceptable foods or you will just be sabotaging yourself.

also read the stickies at the top of the forum and pick up the 2002 DNDR which have a wealth of info...you need to be eating 3 cups of veggies a day...doesn't look like you are getting enough...sign up with fitday.com and track what you are eating each day to make sure you are staying within the right fat/cal/carb ratios

all those test strips tell you is when that urine was made you had excess levels of ketyones in your urine that hadn't been burned for fuel. It doesn't know if they are dietary or body storage fats created from. you can be dark purple and gain weight just eat 20 boxes of butter a day and see.

What is going on is a very natural hesistation in weight loss that happens about this time on any weight loss program.

FOllow the rules and give up the frankenfoods. Stick with the whole foods Dr Atkins wrote about and eat all your veggies. you are laying the foundations now for a life time of healthy Atkins eating that will allow you to become and stay the smaller healthier person you want to be,

Make friends with your tape measure and you will see inchs of fat melting of even when because your body total mass is morphing the scale doesn't validate the hard work you are doing with your exercise and eating,

        Happy low carbing.

Even with the salad you don't think I'm getting my veggies? My salad consists of iceberg lettuce, green peppers, half a tomatoe, shredded cheddar cheese, bacon bits (real ones) and minced egg.

I'm such a chocoholic but if that's what it takes to lose, I'll give it up.

          Another thing....

Walmart sells this REALLY good flavored water (I hate flavored water but this stuff is great). It's called AquaCal, zero carbs, zero calories, no sodium, but it does have aspartame in it. Is this a no no??? Water gets very old without flavor and I hate lemons. Maybe this has something to do with the slowed loss? I only drink one 16.9 bottle every other day.

          Thx!!!

In the book it states you must have 3 cups of salad or 2 cups salad and one cup veggies a day. Also be careful with the bacon because the sodium can make you bloat. The book and the tape measure will be your best friend. You may not lose on the scale but you will lose inches and that is what counts!

I don't know what your portions of salad are but you need to measure and make sure it is 3 cups and you should spread it out thru the day..

aspartame is a no-no...same thing...causes stalls in some...aquafina makes a flavored water called fruit splash that has splenda...

Thanks for the advice! I'm gonna cut out the AquaCal completely and the Atkins bars for the next week and see if that makes a difference. I tried the AquaFina a week or two ago and I wasn't impressed, but I can make myself like it. lol.

Hi Jamie. Good for you looking to stay on the straight and narrow with your eating.

I have re-dedicated myself over the last three weeks and have lost 13 lbs. (4 in week one, 5 in week 2, and 4 in week 3). What I find that really makes the difference with me is exercise and portion control. I can eat the right foods and just maintain, but when I throw in 40 minutes on the treadmill 5 times a week and cutting down slightly on the total amount of food things start moving. I don't mean severely limiting food at all. Instead of three eggs in the morning, I'll have two. Instead of 4 slices of bacon, 3 or even 2. A little less each meal, nothing drastic.

I make sure I burn around 400 calories each workout. It gets you in the fat burning phase for a bit. Also boosts your mnetabolism overall, so exercise is important. I didn't see your exercise routine listed, what are you doing for that?

                  Good luck with your journey!

Just a caution about the bars, candies etc.

Dr. Atkins said that if you use these "foods" you must always follow the Rules of Induction. In other words, if the ingredients ain't on the list, it doesn't cross your lips.

So the bars and candies with nuts or fruit or soy particles don't qualify as Induction friendly no matter whose name is on the package.

Omni....I've been doing the portion control also. At first, I wasn't watching portions because I had to ease myself into the new WOE. I'd have 3 scrambled eggs for breakfast, all the bacon or sausage I wanted, etc. But I've cut back to 2 eggs and just a slice or two of bacon or one sausage patty because I realize fat/cals play a big part of it.

I didn't do any exercise the first 2 weeks, because many experts say you should concentrate on ONE area at a time...if you start a diet, wait a few weeks to start the exercise, or if you start exercise, wait a few weeks to start a new WOE so you're not bombarded. So, I started walking on my lunch hour at work. That's the only exercise I've done so far. My sister in law and I are going to start Pilates in the morning Monday, or at least that's the plan...I have such a hard time getting up any earlier than 6am. But I'm gonna push myself to do it and see what kind of difference it makes. She raves about pilates (she's a tiny thing, but wanting to firm up).

Not2late-that's true about the bars. I just don't understand why Atkins would contradict himself, saying one thing in the book, and then putting a 1 on the box stating it's safe to do on Induction. ??? It even says it on his website. But those things are empty calories so there's really no point in eating them, unless I'm just absolutely desperate. It's better than eating a Hershey bar, but I'm gonna stay away from them. They can get addictive!!

Thanks for the advice everyone!!! It really helps to have "experts" in my corner!

Dr. Atkins stopped running the company shortly before he died. So the company's goal is different than his imo.

Also the bars and shakes were formulated differently back then.

Didn't think about that. Food for thought. My friend has been trying to get me to try the shakes, but I'm afraid of chugging them down like I did the Slim Fast shakes, so I've steered clear of those things.

I just wanted to add that you might want to watch all the processed meats like sausage and hotdogs.. If I eat them frequently..and even deli lunch meat.. It slows me down.
