  • Not giving up my coffee, no sir

I typically have four cups of coffee per morning, and thats it... but four cups is a lot, and two more than the maximum amount that the good doctor recommends.

So, what I did is buy a big bag of decaf, and a big equal-size bag of full-octane. I mixed the two together, and now I can have my four morning cups and not exceed my daily caffeine limit!!! Wheee!

      Hi Shrinkdieter,

Where are you getting this information?

Caffeine is most definitely not allowed on induction - caffeine can cause unstable blood sugar, slow down your weightloss and bring it to screeching halt in the form of a stall.

Caffeine is allowed in moderate quantities further down the road in Life Time Maintenance (read your copy of DANDR Pages # 222-223) and once again not on Induction.

I know it's difficult I was a high octane two pot a day coffee drinker, having done Atkins years ago I know what a three month stall feels like. So I urge you to give up the caffeine, follow the Atkins WOL as intended and your success is inevitable.

From "Ten Easy Steps to Induction"

"9. Limit coffee, tea and soft drinks that contain caffeine to one or two cups per day. Excessive caffeine has been shown to cause unstable blood sugar and trigger cravings."

What the ****? This is the second time the website appears to have set me on the wrong path.

        :anger

I will rethink this "compromise" regarding my caffeine intake - I can live on decaf for the next two weeks. However, I'm starting to get pissed at Atkins.com....

Thanks for the citation from the book, Peterlock, I will check it out tonight.

          Hi ShrinkDieter, :wave

I understand your frustration - After Dr. Atkins died the Atkins website began to change.

Suddenly there were new rules for induction and the other phases of Atkins that conflicted with Dr. Atkins core beliefs - the ones he spent his lifetime saving lives and trying to convince the world of the impending health crisis of obesity that we are in the grips of this moment.

The major changes took place during the highest point of competition among the diets - around the time when the South Beach Diet was enjoying unbound popularity.

Atkins.com used to look and be more of a health, wellness and care related site - unrecognizable compared to the slick corporate marketplace it's become today.

Remember, Atkins isn't a non profit organization - they're a corporation and like any business are driven by their bottom line.

My point is - do yourself a favor and follow your copy of DANDR it's Atkins in it's purest sense.

As for the caffeine the choice is of course your own to make. But with so much evidence that it slows down weightloss and disrupts blood sugar levels my feeling is why even take the chance?

            And to make things worse:
If you drink decaf, you have to count carbs for that as far as I know, 1 carb per cup.
And another thing, you say 'I can live on decaf for the next two weeks', so after those 2 weeks you want to start drinking coffee again ?
You can only start drinking coffee in moderation when you are in maintenance as I understand the doctor well.

I agree with Peter. I do use atkins.com for its journal, because I like the way it is situated. However all they really do it petal the Atkins products. Even the two week induction menu they have on there is outrageous! Stick to the book.

By the way, depending on your nutritional information source, 8 ounces of coffee (decaf or otherwise) has 0.6 -1 net carb---which has to be counted towards your daily carb count.

Anyhow, just to clear up what Peter and everyone else has said about caffeine. Dr. Atkins said "no" to caffeine because caffeine can destabilize your blood sugar. Part of the weight loss on Atkins depends on stabilizing your blood sugar, which keeps your insulin response normal. Insulin is the hormone that grabs sugar in your blood and transport it to parts of your body where it is used for immediate energy or stored away as fat. I always found it curious why Atkins Nutritionals, Inc. said it was okay to have caffeinated products. Dr. Atkins began discouraging caffeine use in the late 1970s.....

                  OK, so here's what

All right, so after work I'm buying a pound of some good decaf to last me for the next two weeks. So, does this mean after induction is over I can go back to doing a cup or two in the mornings?

I will be consulting my book tonight for some more detailed answers. Obviously I love my coffee and am having some problems with this.

It's funny, I have been a beer-or-two-a-night person for years, and giving it up for induction isn't a big problem for me. The coffee thing, well, that's another story.

Since the good Doctor died, I don't trust a word from ANA. :nono
Hate to admit it, but its true. I think ANA has their own agenda and not the least of which is to pad their own pockets.

Go by the 2002 version of DANDR. Like Peter said, follow it and you will have success.

All right ditching the caffeinated coffee until maintainence

                      Dammit. :no

But I AM drinking decaf. I'll count the carbs and all that. I at least am keeping the ritual.

                              javanut no more

shrinkdieter, i know exactly how you feel about the coffee. i totally did not want to give it up and i was very stubborn about it.

i also had a sentimental attachment to coffee because my beloved husband who died in june of 2003, loved it dearly. so giving up coffee was tough, tough, tough for me. tougher than bread. but i did give it up and this is why.

everytime i had a cup of coffee i would get this wonderful lift. however, a short time later, the lift would evaporate and I would need - guess what? another cup of coffee. over and over again.

substances that lift you, then drop you, are so bad for the body and so bad for your blood.

i resolved to give it up. and it was hard. so hard that i realized how horribly addicting it was. i had to be VERY stern with myself.

i grieved about that coffee for about 2 weeks and then the craving for it was gone.

finally, i'm free from it. i'm on an even keel and i don't need that phony high that coffee gave me anymore. i like foods and beverages that keep me on an even keel now.

so do give up the coffee. it is worth it. you can do it. i promise the day will come when you will be glad you did.

as for the atkins website - sadly, it is no longer a reflection of dr atkins life work.

i'm sure dr atkins would just be mortified by the slick misinformation they dish out. fortunately, we can rely on the information in his book. they can't take that away from him.
