Default Travel Tips

I had a very bad last week. My birthday was on the 24th and I indulged in pizza and beer. I cut back to induction levels and was back in ketosis by the time the weekend rolled around and I was off to Minneapolis for a friend's daughter's Bat Mitzvah where the train ran off the track.

The hotels "carb-o-licious" breakfast was impossible. I missed the hard boiled eggs on the first morning and ate instant oatmeal with spenda instead. Then, all the meals at the Temple and the Jewish Community Center were catered and milk kosher. The only protein was smoked fish and felafel. I could "legally" eat almost nothing but I was hungry so I ate some felafel, hummus, and fresh fruit. I admit I couldn't resist the dessert table . Then, I was starving by the time the next milk meal was served which had even fewer choices.

By the time the weekend was over, I was UP 4 lbs, almost my entire weight loss . I have dropped half that (water weight) as I went back to Induction levels again and I think I might be back in ketosis. I measure tomorrow (one month since my first measurement), so I'll see where I really am.

Guess what? I have *another* Bat Mitzvah this weekend in Michigan. I need some help in putting togther a survival kit for the weekend. I am currently on the Veggie rung, but I would rather move up a couple rungs for the weekend if it will help me make it through without feeling like a total failure. There will be a frige in the room and we can take a cooler on the road.

Take tuna packets with you. Eat before you go to the event. and carry one of those tuna packets with you in your purse when you go. Theres no shame in having a baggy of cauliflower in your handbag.

(I learned the hardway. I ate popcorn and peanuts a few weeks ago when the scheduled dinner was delayed by over an hour)

Since you're bringing a cooler, get yourself some cheese and meat. You could buy deli meat, but it's so full of sodium, that I'd rather cook some chicken and turkey, cut it into cubes, and pack it into containers, and throw it on ice. Slice up some veggies, cucumbers, tomatos, celery. Some of those Chinette bowls are great on trips. Do you have a microwave in your hotel room? Grab a half dozen eggs, and you could throw a couple eggs in your chinette bowl, and microwave them. Just make sure you check them frequently and stir them every few seconds, otherwise, you'll wreck the eggs and make a huge mess.

Worse case scenario, you could hit a fast food joint and get yourself a few bunless burgers and a side salad.

Whatever you do, once you get there, make sure you know where there's a grocery store so you can re-stock for the trip home.

Good luck

If you can get a hold of a hot pot (an electric kettle that is wide enough to boil eggs inside), you can easily plug that into any wall socket and boil eggs in your hotel room.

Anyhow, you can make quiches and freeze them for quick meals. Bring whole vegetables like peppers, cucumbers, etc. because the whole veggie will keep longer than the cut up veg. Just remember to bring a knife and a small cutting board.

If you like oil and vinegar dressings, you can bring a small bottle of oil and a small bottle of vinegar and mix the amount you need. Oil and vinegar typically don't require refrigeration.

Canned meats travel well. If there are supermarkets or deli's nearby, you can purchase meat products there.

If you go to the 14 Day Inductin forum, there's a sticky thread called "Induction recipe basics". In that thread is a recipe for Atkins Revolution Rolls. You can make a batch or two and use them as sandwich buns or as breakfast food.

Thanks everyone!

I am in the process of putting together a little travel kit. I bought a package of string cheese for snacking and I microwaved a lb of bacon to bring in a ziplock. My hubby will help my eat the bacon and my daughter will help on the cheese . I also bought some beef jerky from Cubs, but it is too sweet and not "real". I'm very fussy about jerky, so I guess my husband will be finishing it. I will make my own version of Revolution Rolls (I use a square disposable ziplock container) which I will also ziplock to keep from getting too stale. I will then toss them in the toaster at the hotel, one per day. I'l going to cut up some peppers and celery. Maybe some cukes. I really don't like canned meats and canned tuna is the worst of the worst for me.

Did I read something about someone making deli-meat roll-ups with cream cheese? That sounds like a good snack too. Any more ideas?

You might want to call the Bat Mitzvah hostess and ask her what the menu will be. Tell her you are cutting out added sugars and just basically trying to eat healthier. That way, you'll be prepared when they start serving food you can('t) eat.
