Default A statement about spices...

Hi Everybody,

Scooter here. Wow you guys were definately right about carb counting and spices. My wife bought this cookbook for my birthday, Low Carb and Lovin' It.
From the Food TV guy that lost all the weight. There are some awesome recipes in this book, however, George Stella says he doesn't much follow Dr. Atkins style, which I found to be.....short of 'dangerous' or 'tempting'. It looks like you could definately overeat his way. Anyway, back on subject. I had a beautiful piece of salmon, kindof like the whole fish without the head.

I made his blackening spice
5 Tblsp Kosher salt (I used half that)
5 Tblsp Paprika
1 Tblsp Thyme
1 Tblsp Black Pepper
1/4 Tspn of cayenne pepper
1/4 Tspn of white pepper
1 Tblsp Splenda

He says, sprinkle it all over the food, then sprinkle it some more until it is all covered, that would have been about half of the above mentioned spice,
check this out......the would have been almost 15 carbs! Yikes!!!!!!
That is insane, now of course, the fish made 3 meals, approx 3 servings, 2 cups each, and the carbs about 5 per serving, but man, those spice and seasoning carbs do add up!!

Be careful out there, the salt content also seemed high. The fish was awesome on the grill and I plan on making salmon patties...(no italian seasoned bread crumbs - ground pork rinds with a 1/4 teaspoon of italian seasoning...) tonight.

One other thing, I think the carb content could have been lower (I used Fitday) because I peeled the skin off afterwards and did not eat it, that is what was covered thickly in seasonings.

I just wanted to make a point. I know there have seemed to be a lot of talk about spices and seasonings lately. Make your own. Just be sure you count those carbs! It does add up. Good luck. Oh yeah, and I've lost another 2 pounds this week! I so look forward to weigh day anymore!! I love Mondays! What a nice way to start the week and be motivated. Dr. Atkins sure was a very smart man.

Wow, Scooter, that was really shocking! Thank you for putting it out there... I was in such shock that I had to fitday it myself to check (not that I didn't believe you; it's just such an incredible discoverey!). Paprika is high-ish carb (especially FIVE TABLESPOONS), who woulda thunk?

Thanks again... hope that salmon was yummy!

All spices and herbs have carbs. Typically, they are used in small amounts so it won't affect the carb count per serving too much. But some recipes.....

This is slightly off topic, but seriously.....

How can you eat something that has a tablespoon of cinnamon in it? When I bake cinnamon rolls for my non-low carb friends, I use 1 tablespoon of cinnamom for 12 rolls! That's about a 1/3 teaspoon per roll, and it's very fragrant and very cinnamony.
