Default Milk or Yogurt or the 1 Oz Nuts

I keep reading the 2002 book and I don't see any reference on the OWL chapter about Milk, Yogurt or even low carb ice cream.....more I read or check Atkins website, I cannot find the milk and yogurt.

Then in regards to the 1oz nuts, Dr Atkins said the week you start limited to 1oz, beyong that I undestand you could eat the number of nuts (12 macademias, 20 pecan, etc) he mentioned in the book. Is this only my interpretation??

Then, I undestand that the Atkins website has some credit and valid information, that may be "updated" in some way compare with the actual book, but I don't see anyone usining as a reference...why is that??

Thanks!!

On the Carbohydrate Ladder, the second rung is dairy---fresh cheeses and more aged cheese. If you look at the "Power of 5" List, it also has listed heavy cream. So hence low carb ice cream. Yogurt and milk are dairy products. So they technically go under the Dairy rung.

Under the Power of 5 Section, it lists the portion size of nuts and seeds. With the exception of cashews, it is 1 ounce.

The number of seeds or nuts listed is approximately 1 ounce, or in the case of cashews, 1/2 ounce.

Most of our members like to weigh the 1 ounce because it varies with the size of the nuts. For example, "jumbo" cashews are larger than regular sized cashews, so 9 jumbo will weigh more than 9 regulars.

So it's always safer to weigh them.

The Atkins website and the company has changed dramatically since Dr. Atkins died. They changed the diet to make it more mainstream (lower fat) and to advertize their Atkins products. So it makes you question their agenda now, especially since newer scientific evidence is showing that dietary fat isn't the real bad guy in heart disease and obesity.

Also, when Dr. Atkins was alive, he ran the Atkins Center for Complimentary Medicine in New York City. That was his private medical practice where he treated his patients for weight loss and other illnesses. So he was able to use his Atkins Center patients to see if something worked on the diet or if it didn't. Hence the observations that aspartame may cause weight loss difficulties in some people and the data for the Carbohydrate Ladder. Prior to the 2002 book, On-Going Weight Loss phase wasn't as structured. But Dr. Atkins made it more structured, again, based on his patients. Atkins Nutritionals Inc. doesn't have a medical clinic. Also they have altered the diet at least 3 times since Dr. Atkins death. Dr. Atkins came out with his revisions every decade or so, giving him more time to observe his patients and collect data before altering his diet book.

Thanks Meg!

I see your point in a more commercial approach from the Atkins product manufactures, but I thought that maybe the Atkins Center was passed to family members or partners that could continue with Sr. Atkins legacy.

I forget to add, that I don't see the equivalence between Milk/Yogurt and Cream/Farmer Cheese, the first 2 are higher in Carbs by at least 2-3 carbs per serving. I see these items more convenient for pre-maintenance...but this is just my opinion.

Anyway, I'll stay away cuz there is not such as 1/4 glass of milk for me...if you know what I mean.

Cheers and Happy OWL.

Dr. Atkins and Mrs. Atkins didn't have children. I think she retains some ownership in the corporation, but nothing along the lines in product development. As for the Atkins Center patients----they were told to follow up with a list of physicians who formerly worked with Dr. A. These physicians worked separately, so unless they share their data with the company, it's not like the patients data is stored in one place.

5 net carbs of milk is about 3 fluid ounces or a little less than 1/2 cup. I use milk and yogurt as ingredients in a recipe as opposed to using them as the main feature in a recipe. For example, I use milk in chowders and yogurt I use in salad dressings or marinades. In other words, I use it as I would sour cream (I don't have the tendency to dip a spoon into sour cream, take out an amount and cram it into my mouth.)

I just reed this interview of Dr. A and Larry King:

CALLER: Hi. I wanted to know -- I know you can eat eggs and
protein on your diet. Why not any milk? ATKINS: Well, milk
has got lactose in it. Whenever you hear a word with ose,
that's a sugar. So there is sugar in milk. And that's...

KING: Skim milk, too?

ATKINS: More so. Skim milk has even more because it doesn't
even have cream in it. So cream is about the one thing that
the cow puts out that doesn't have carbohydrate.

KING: If you would have -- you don't have cereal, do you?

ATKINS: Well, there are low some carbohydrate cereals now.

KING: You put sweet cream on it?

ATKINS: And I mix it with heavy cream, yes, I do, sir.

KING: It sounds..

ATKINS: Delicious.

Um, I think that there was one doctor who wanted to continue running the clinic in NYC (I forget his name off the top of my head, I know that the wait list was long to see him, and expensive - I did consider trying to get an appointment), and was told that he was not allowed to use the name and continue on the work being there. He was the more "partner"ish person at the Atkins Clinic. He does run his own clinic in NYC, and still follows the same patterns as were followed when Dr. Atkins was alive.

There are other "versions" of milk that some people are okay with - like Calorie Countdown (previously known as Carb Countdown when Low-Carb was a more acceptable way to eat)... and when you reach the legumes rung, there is soy milk.

Also some people like nut 'milks' in place of 'real' milk.

BTW if I am following a recipe that calls for milk I water down double cream (heavy cream) to a milk consistency instead.

It also depends what point in the diet you are in....For example, during Induction the only dairy allowed is cheese, cream and butter. So milk wouldn't be legal during Induction. But as you move to OWL, Pre-Maintenance and Maintenance Phases, the food choices expand. That's why on OWL and Pre-Maintenance, you may add foods like potatoes, kidney beans, winter squash, peaches, strawberries, and oatmeal.
