Default A quick question to moderators

I got a few quick questions and please do not reply: "read the book." I lost it and I sprained my ankle (not a big deal, very minor) so I'm not putting pressure on it because I'm in school starting Tuesday and I'm on my feet all the time there. Hence I'm not going to the nearest Barnes and Nobles because of the parking and walking.

1. Which veggies are forbidden on OWL rung 1?

2. Should I spread out my +5 net carbs through out the day or can I eat the extra carbs (+ 5 g) in one meal?

3. Am I supposed to bump up the net carbs just 3 days per week?

4. Before, Ketostix were not important (during induction), should I rely on them now?

5. The trick, if memory serves me right, is to replace fat grams with the net garbs, am I correct?

6. Does the glycemic value of the veggies matter?

Thanks in advance.

Sorry about your ankle Norman...I found a sprain to be more painful than an actual break. Super inconvenient too. Take care and get better soon.

My understanding is that we eat the same veggies as on Induction until we get to the starchy rung 8. I'll let the pros answer the questions. FWIW, I've never used ketostix and I'm still in ketosis.

ETA: I got my book from Amazon...cheap and it arrived in a few days and that was with the free super saver shipping (I got other things).

Stay off your feet!!!

1. Which veggies are forbidden on OWL rung 1?
Read the book

Rung 1 foods are the Induction veggies. You could also introduce low carb veggies that aren't on the list, like watercress, seaweed (nori aka sushi wraps, wakame, etc.), some ethnic greens, etc.

2. Should I spread out my +5 net carbs through out the day or can I eat the extra carbs (+ 5 g) in one meal?
You should be spreading your carbs out even during Induction. But if you choose to have your 5 net OWL Rung 1 carbs in addition your supper, you may.
Quote:
3. Am I supposed to bump up the net carbs just 3 days per week?
Depends. IF the food is "new" to you (meaning you didn't eat it during Induction Phase), then you add it every other day for the first week. If you continue to lose weight and/or you do not have blood sugar instability problems, you add it daily for the following week and see what happens to you. If the food isn't "new" to you, then you may have it daily and see what happens to you.

4. Before, Ketostix were not important (during induction), should I rely on them now?
I've found that taking the blood sugar stability test in the book to be a better predictor of how a food affects you than the ketostix or waiting for your weekly weigh in. Additionally, you might be able to detect the blood sugar symptoms within an hour of eating the food. If you use a ketostix, you'll have to wait to urinate....which might not be for a few hours.

5. The trick, if memory serves me right, is to replace fat grams with the net garbs, am I correct?
Yes and no. There is a sticky in the OWL forum that addresses this.

Quote:
6. Does the glycemic value of the veggies matter?
Yes. That's why doing the blood sugar symptom test in the book is helpful. BUT the problem with the glycemic levels is this: it doesn't take into account how other macronutrients (fat and protein) affect the digestion, absorption and insulin effect of those foods.

By the way, read the book.

Thanks Mizski! I'm guarding my ankle big-time. Last year, about this time, I sprained it while playing touch-football. The pain was so severe that the slightest breeze from the ceiling fan would send me into delirium. No pain killer worked. I would take Demerol and I'd still be in excruciating pain. Granted, as high as a kite and nauseated, but still in pain. It took about 2-3 months to be able to walk without a limp. In my house, I would use my office chair as a make-shift wheelchair. The sprain set back my education for about a year. I believe that event also helped me pack on the pounds. I once had a kidney stone but that event pain wise took the cake. I believe it was the closet I've come to having empathy regarding child birth. I'm convinced if labor was that painful, mammals would of never made it up the evolutionary ladder. The first animal to give birth would of immediatley become extinct.

"...Super inconvenient too..." That's the understatement of the century. I was even scared to use the bathroom fearing I would never get off the bowl. I couldn't drive. Hitting the brake pedal would almost make me lose conciousness.

Great idea about Amazon, I forgot they existed.
