Default Rung 6

I am moving on to rung 6 I am excited for something new and happy that I am following the rungs ok so far. I am skipping rung 5 because I don't drink at all.

This rung confuses me a bit for some reason. I am going to make chili today with red kidney beans. On the list in the stickies, it says 5 grams is 1/5 cup of beans. Can I use a bit more than that, as long as I keep track of it? I don't like peppers and onions so my chili is very basic and wouldn't have much for other carbs in it.

Thanks.
Jane

Thanks! You will get there. It has taken me a while, I am just trying to take my time with the rungs. I don't want to get to premaintenance and suddenly feel out of control.

I tend to overthink things and confuse myself about this stuff.

Nice seeing your posts around the forum Sham.

I wouldn't go above the 5 grams the first few times you use the beans. Get a feel for how they affect you.

Keep in mind that it is ~1/5 cup cooked red kidney beans. And since there is no 1/5 cup measuring cup (as far as I recall from my stint in the US), you might want to weigh them. These are foods very concentrated in carbs, and being off by a small volume can add many carbs!

Stick to 5 net carbs per serving of chili.

I have questions about this rung too. According to DANDR, legumes (OWL Rung 6) are a Pre-Maintenance food and he introduces the Power of Ten (instead of Five). Not sure if we're even supposed to have beans until Pre-Maintenance but from posts here I'm thinking we can if we keep it to 5g net carbs.

Continuing on with that logic according to DANDR, 2 TBS of kidney beans would be 5g net carbs; according to FitDay, it is 2 TBS + 1 tsp of kidney beans. How much is 1 tsp of kidney beans??? Probably like 2 beans!

About your question if you can have more beans because you don't have onions/peppers in the chili, I think the answer is no because we are not supposed to have whatever amount of an OWL food; we are supposed to keep them in those controlled amounts.

I found the sticky measurements to be confusing. I mean, I don't have a 1/5 c. measure so it was hard for me to figure out how much that is. Needless to say, I haven't been having many legumes since I started OWL 6 because there just isn't very many in the amounts allowed. That little amount sure was tasty though!

p.s. Are there tomatoes in your chili? Those make the carbs in a recipe jump up really fast even without peppers/onions.

Yes, they can be added in OWL.

That's exactly why I weigh them!

Beans - are a nuisance - you just look at them and they add up to 5 carbs
Just can eat a few in salads. I make a chili that I call "almost beanless" chili so that I do not overdo those beans.
And no - do not take away veggies to add more of higher rung carbs - that is a bit of a slide right there and you do not want to go there. Veggies are the most important part (I tell myself this every day )

Thanks to all! I am going to go very easy on the beans. I don't put tomatoes in my sauce but will use some plain tomato sause and beef broth (might be more of a soup than anything). So, yes there will be some other carbs in it. I figure 1/5 cup of beans is 3 Tablespoons. So, maybe 2 or 3 beans instead of 1 in the teaspoon.

You might also try black soybeans instead of red kidney beans.
