For modern kitchens, you cook enough oatmeal to last you a week. Then pour the cooked oatmeal into a food container. Use either a large one or into individual portion-sized containers. Store them in the frig. Bring a serving with you to work. Pop into the microwave to heat. Then eat.

Another thing I do is have the slow cooker cook the oatmeal for me: dump the oatmeal or other grain into the slow cooker, add the water, and flip the switch to either LOW (cook for 6 hours) or HIGH (cook for about 4 hours.) This allows me to cook the oatmeal without having to babysit it on the stove.
Great ideas.. and i can mix some fruit in it for flavor.. will try this

I thought I'd pass on what I "used" to do prior to starting Atkins. I have a wide mouth Soup Thermos, and used that. Perfect every time... and you can't get much easier

Steel Cut Oatmeal in a Thermos Overnight Recipe #285466

I read the recipie for this in a crock pot, but mine is rather large and I only wanted to make 1 serving. My Mom has been cooking whole wheat "wheat berries" in a thermos overnight, so I tried the steel cut oats, turned out perfect, so easy! I will definetaly do it again, and wanted to share

6¼ hours | 5 min prep
SERVES 1

  1. Measure oats into thermos.
  2. Pour over boiling water.
  3. I boiled water in the microwave, easy.
  4. Close thermos tightly, enjoy in the morning!
  5. Drain out excess water, stir in dried fruit, sugar, milk whatever you prefer.

I used to do that in college.

But since the OWL portion of oatmeal is 5 net carbs--roughly 1 tablespoon of uncooked oatmeal that will be a small portion in that Thermos.

Following a Scottish recipe, I found that you can cook that amount of oatmeal in 1/4 cup of water. The result isn't a thick porridge, but has a consistency of a canned cream of mushroom soup.

I tended to use oatmeal and grains as ingredients in a dish rather than the central dish because the portions are small. Even for Pre-Maintenance, the oatmeal amount is roughly 2 tablespoons uncooked (about 10 net carbs.)
