Default Pregnancy Diet question

I have been on extended induction for 3 weeks (2 weeks induction, 1 week ext. ind.). I jusst found out I am expecting and am wondering if I move right into the lifetime maintenance phase, if I will gain all of the weight I had lost during induction. Does anyone have any advice on this? Is it really bad that I have been on induction and pregnant?

Congratulations Allison!

As far as being on induction - what's done is done Allison - please try not to worry about it. You were likely eating some of the best foods you could possibly eat because you were eating Atkins style! (Especially like broccoli with all it's folate, etc.!)

I remember when I found out I was expecting it was right after I'd had numerous nights of drinking way too much alcohol and I was so scared! The nurse tried to tell me not to worry about it, but I can tell you it was on my mind the whole time! But my daughter was perfect thank God.

Both Dr. Atkin's book and this board do recommend moving straight to maintenance level until after your baby is born and you're done nursing.

I'm sorry but I don't know if you'll gain back the weight you've lost because of moving to that phase, but you will of course gain a few pounds every month. Have you been to the doctor yet? They should give you some great info on what to expect.

Wendy

Congratulations
Your baby is more than likely fine. Babies take what they need from the mother's body. I've heard you need to move onto the maintenance phase.

Well, there is good news and not so good news about moving into the lifetime extended phase of the diet for you.

The good news is that I highly doubt anything terrible will happen because you got pregnant while on induction. I know it's hard not to worry (the worrying never ends by the way--lol) but if you were following the diet correctly then you were taking a great multivitamin and getting in folate rich veggies.

The not so good news is, most likely when you move into lifetime maintenance you'll end up eating something that will set off a binge and there goes your diet out the window.

Most women experience some sort of morning sickness during the first few months which keeps them from eating meats or cheeses or whatever sets off the nausea--and that causes them to lose weight. Every woman and pregnancy is different so you may or may not go through that yourself.

I just had my fourth and got pregnant while on Atkins last year. I stayed where I was--I think I made it all the way to berries before getting pregnant--and then moved into lifetime maintenance, ate something that caused a binge, and then went off Atkins for the remainder of my pregnancy--gained about 60 pounds total, and now am a member of the second time around club here in the Atkins forum.

There are other women though who have been able to remain on Atkins while pregnant. Like I said--results may vary, lol. You'll never really know what to expect until you go through it yourself.

Congratulations with your new baby and good luck with Atkins!!

Congratulations on your pregnancy!!! I don't think you need to worry about getting pregnant on induction. I've read of it happening quite a bit. I kind of figure Back in the "hunter gatherer days" of man kind everyone likely ate more like induction and the human race flourished.

I don't know much about the rest of your ? but big congrats on the baby!

Congrats! Dont worry if you gain the weight back. There will be plenty of time to loss the weight after you have recovered from having your baby. That is what I keep telling myself. After all between car pooling older kids and late night feedings/changings...with a little help from atkins we will be our old self again. If Not Better.
Do go ahead and move to maintance or modify your food intake.

Take care yourself!

Hello and congratulations!

I moved to the maintenance phase, a few weeks into my pregnancy, (didn't find out til I was between 5 and 7 weeks along) and I have only gained 5-8lbs during the entire pregnancy. I am 37 weeks now and have had no complications so far. All of my tests have come back negative and fine, and baby is head down in position and is gaining all the weight that she's supposed to...I've just been losing more than gaining. As long as you don't let yourself go nuts and let others fill you head with the "it's ok, you're eating for 2" lie, you will be fine. You only actually need an additional 300 calories a day for the baby..not an additional meal. I've also been practicing portion control, and making sure that I stick with my water drinking, limit my salt intake, and if I have a craving for something sweet I make sure it's sugar free (made w/ splenda). The 1st 4 months, I had serious morning sickness, and it seemed like the only thing I could keep down were carb-filled foods...even with all that going on, I've still only gained 5-8 lbs. Once the morning sickness passed, I was able to get back to maintenance and started losing weight! I asked the doc if that was ok...she told me to steer clear of starchy carb-filled foods and get plently of exercise...which I do.

I hope this helps...it can be done. I should be about 35 lbs from my goal weight after I have my baby and I owe that to this WOE, because I know that if I had made the choice to "eat for 2" I'd probably be 2 times as big as I was before I found out I was pregnant
