| I never had a problem doing LC while nursing. In fact, I made less milk if I ate more carbs. Nothing like a big fat steak to get those ducts producing. The closest I came to noticing a problem was w/ my Splenda - it made DS's pee smell strong/bad. I switched to stevia and he tolerated that just fine. As far as I know he's not had any negative effects from whatever ketones might have come out in my breast milk. He's just over 2 years old and already over 3 feet tall and he's healthy and strong as an ox - the boy just learned to climb the bunk bed w/o the ladder. I do call him my little Atkins baby because he loves meat and veggies - maybe because I ate so much while pregnant w/ him and nursing him? Hmmm..

| I found this. It is a quote from a transcript: Power Surge™ Live! Presents Robert C. Atkins, M.D. Audience: Is your diet safe to use while breastfeeding a newborn? Or should I wait until she is weaned? Dr. Robert Atkins: The diet is quite safe for breastfeeding; however, weight loss will be painfully slow because of the hormones involved in supporting breastfeeding. |

| Huh? I thought it was a no-no to nurse while on induction because of the ketones and toxins fat released in our breastmilk. Did I misunderstand? I would have never quit nursing just to do this diet except I thought I read that.

| OK - we need to have someone who has ketostiks and breastmilk do a test for us! I thought ketones and stuff were peed out. If they are excreted in breastmilk as well, would they do the same to a baby as they do to us, if ingested? Would we start getting ultra-thin babies?

| http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.c...ad.php?t=42085 (Effects of LC on lactating mother and nursing infant) Here's some info I had found. It would have been much healthier for both me and my son if I would have managed to stay on Atkins instead of going back to my old eating habits. Still breastfeeding; still trying to get on track with my eating. Kudos to all who manage it. ~ Linda

| hey everyone- thanks for all the imput- I have some ketosticks- and i have tested my breast milk. I have TRACE amounts- my urine has moderate. i don't think its anything serious. Something interesting tho is that my son is happier- not NEARLY as fussy and he sleeps all through the night!! i'm loving that. but of course i don't have him on atkins- he eats toast with jelly, strawberry nutragrain bars, crackers... I'm not exactly doing induction by the book- like i mentioned- i eat all the food groups- i just eat 20 net carbs per day... |

| Something interesting someone mentioned on another board I am on is that babies are naturally in ketosis off and on while being breastfed. I have no info/sources to back that up, but if that's true, then a few extra ketones in breast milk doesn't sound like something horrible for them. I think it's kinda like pregnancy, too. No one wants to recommend it for women, but I was in ketosis - and a lot of women are who have to do a diabetic plan while pregnant - and I always read that societies that don't eat a lot of carbs - and ancient people's too - wouldn't their pregnant women be in ketosis as well? Everything I've learned is that it's a benign product of fat-burning. Nothing like ketoacidosis. As long as your blood sugars are normal ketosis is fine. <shrug> I guess it really depends on how you hear the info first. Is it doom and gloom or something completely natural and safe.

| I just tested my milk as well (ha, been 2 weeks since weaning and there is still some there, lol) and only slight trace amounts (closer to negative though) when urine measured large amounts. Interesting, I was so misinformed! Awesome to know thanks!!!
