Default Introduction

I'm Kathy...joined Atkins back in late 2006, lost 80 pounds in 7 months or something like that, made goal, and then my whole life changed. I left my husband, left my job, moved to Hawaii, met someone new, and somehow I've lost my way on Atkins. Thankfully, I'm only 10 lbs up from my original goal weight but truth be told, I'm about 20 lbs. up from my low weight and where I felt most comfortable.

Since I fell completely off the wagon, I've tried a few times quite unsuccessfully to go through induction and to do it right, and I finally realized that I need support so here I am.

The thing is, I know what I did wrong last time. When I went on induction I lost something like 22 pounds and I was scared to leave induction. I thought I'd somehow screw up the rungs and gain all the weight back. I never did any rungs, never did pre-maintenance, just induction and then started eating things I shouldn't have been eating at all. This time I know I need support and help to do it right! Even though it kills a perfectionist like me to admit that I've made a mistake, that's exactly what I'm doing and I know that being here and asking for some accountability will help me to stay on induction for the next two weeks and then to move on the proper way this time!

Hey Kathy, welcome to the STAC! Do you have a copy of the 2002 version of the book called Dr. ATkins New Diet Revolution? Very important key ingredient for success. On this board it's referred to as the DANDR.

As a recovering perfectionist (lol) I'll encourage you to read, read, read the DANDR and follow it to the letter. Okay, my "recovery" includes being easier on myself if I don't do something perfectly. But go as close as you can to doing the Induction the way it says, and you'll be successful.

It was so easy for me, the first time I did this, to do just as you said. The weight came off so fast and easy. But I did not learn how to adjust myself to the long term requirements of keeping it off, and still having a variety of menu to pick from in various circumstances. So I encourage you to read the book, study the ideas, and start learning by doing. I'm finding it so much fun, and eventually I think I will have a form of almost every kind of food in my menu that I miss right now, ie bread, brown rice, and occasional desserts...

Have fun, welcome to the STAC, and good luck!

Thanks for the welcome. Red - yes, I do have the book. I reread it this weekend so that should help. I think my whole problem is when I find something that works (ie. induction), I'm afraid to move beyond that because, even though I know it's worked for so many other people, it might not work with my body and then I'll lose ground. Silly, I know, but that was my problem the last time. I totally committed this time to following the book & moving up the ladder. I realize that it's the only way that I can expect to see long term success.

I was really afraid to move up from Induction too. I got some good coaching from Elizellen and so took the leap. It's cool. It gives you another whole level of confidence when it works. And it nurtures the "long term" mental attitude that has to be developed for this to be a lifetime plan. You know what they say, feel the fear, and move ahead anyway! Good luck...

I'm glad I'm not the only one! This time I am moving past induction. I know that I have to. For one, before I just stopped altogether, I was still losing weight on induction when I had hit 130 at the rate of a pound every other day. So, If I stay on it indefinitely I would probably get super tiny. I consider myself pretty lucky that I've strayed for over a year and have only seen a 20 lb. weight gain...what makes me miserable is that I don't have the energy or the confidence that I did when I was doing the right thing before. No weight loss and all the energy I had would make it worthwhile!

Your comments are reminding me of the night I read over the pre-maintenance and lifetime maintenance parts of the book. All of a sudden a light went on in my head, hey, this is a way of life that is attainable. In other words, I could actually get to a place where eating is not a struggle with guilt and worry overtones. I just feel it in my bones that we can do this, that we can get to that place of ease with our eating, and as a byproduct have much better health and appearance.... For me the dawning of that hope came when I read what Dr. Atkins said about lifetime maintenance. He's serious about it! And I believe in what he wrote.... Good luck, keep in touch...
