Question about Lipolisis, Ketones, Energy and Blood Sugar
permalink (Question about Lipolisis, Ketones, Energy and Blood Sugar) (Question about Lipolisis, Ketones, Energy and Blood Sugar)

Hello Everyone, Hope all is well...

I am sorry if I am way off on these questions but I guess I am a little anxious about my body not having many carbs and that it can actually function well on a Ketogentic Metabolism instead of the other...

I am on day four and started to change the keto sticks to a dark pink red color... Help me understand... once I start buring fat for fuel (Lipolisis) my body produces the Ketones... then my body automatically uses the Ketones to produce glucose giving my body energy and my body will automatically regulate my blood sugar levels at normal and healthy levels? Is this correct?

If so once I am in Lipolisis and producing Ketones is there ever a chance that my blood sugar can drop to dangerously low levels due to the low carbs I am eating? or if I am not producing enough Ketones at any given time? Do I ever need to keep carbs or sugar around just incase my blood sugar drops do to not enough carbs or Ketones in my system? or will my body regulate that process and I don't have to worry about that process any more?

Please try and clear this up for me so I sleep better at night... So far so good I have lost 7.5 pounds... is that to much to fast? or am I right on? thanks for your help... by the way I am losing more weight with 1200 more calories than I had before I started losing weight... amazing...

Thank you "SLIM QUEST"

The ketones do not produce glucose. Ketones are a waste product created by your body when it uses fat as its primary energy source vice dietary carbohydrates. I can't vouch for the fact that your blood sugar levels will be at "normal" or "healthy" levels. I can say that I personally have never had a problem. I eat at least 5 meals a day.

As far as 7.5 pounds lost in 4 days goes, you haven't provided enough information to help with that. It depends on how much you have to lose and where you started at. I can say that I usually lose between 12 and 20 lbs during a clean 2 week induction. It doesn't keep going at that pace. Protein is a diuretic, so you will lose water weight. A gallon of water weighs 8 pounds, and most of what you have lost is water.

The keto stick color is immaterial. Look at it like a pregnancy test (either positive or negative) Darker colors vice lighter colors mean nothing. The fact that ketones are present in your urine is proof that you are in ketosis. A darker color could be many things, you hydration level and the time of day have much to do with the color. I don't think I answered all of your questions, but hopefully it will make you sleep better.

Just saw your starting weight in your profile. I don't think that you have anything to worry about the 7.5 pounds in 4 days. You are on the right track. Sarina started close to where you are at and she is an inspiration to us all. Search for her if you want some great reading. She has a recent thread in the "celebration forum".

Default Re: Question about Lipolisis, Ketones, Energy and Blood Sugar

Hi Slim Quest -- I am a Type 2 diabetic and have had no trouble since I started with "dangerously low" blood sugars. My blood sugars were high when I began and as of 2 weeks ago the doctor told me to go from testing twice a day to 3 times a week because my numbers are so good.

You may do better by eating more frequently during the day - you'll have to see. I eat 3 regular size meals and usually have a snack in the afternoon and once in awhile a snack after dinner.

TJ is right - the sticks don't really do much except confuse people. I have shown color once since I started .... but I am well hydrated so that has a lot to do with it. It's easier to watch for keotones in your urine and breath -- believe me, you'll know the difference between not being in keotsis and being in keotsis by your urine and breath much better than with a stick.

Hope this helps.

I reallly suggest you purchase the 2002 Dr Atkins New Diet Revolution book -- you can get on online through www.half.com and www.Amazon.com have them pretty inexpensively – mine was under $5.00 with shipping.

When you read the book you'll understand why and how this way of eating works. It explains the science between the plan and will give you information on supplements you should be taking also. It's been invaluable to me and many others here.

Default Re: Question about Lipolisis, Ketones, Energy and Blood Sugar

In diabetics who take medication or insulin injections there is a risk of hypoglycemia. The reason being that atkins will lower the blood glucose, which was the prior function of the medication. As such, diabetics should approach atkins in concert with their doctor and with blood glucose monitoring. That way, as the diabetes improves, the physician can lower the dose of medications to prevent hypoglycemia.

Otherwise, assuming a normal healthy liver, fats and proteins are converted into glucose ("gluconeogenesis", wikipedia it if interested in more). This glucose should be sufficient to maintain normoglycemia. However, if it is not, ketones are used by the brain as a source of energy (wiki ketone bodies).

All that said, I think it would be wise for anyone with a chronic condition, like diabetes, or a desire for substantia weight loss to talk with their primary care doctor about it. With the most recent two clinical studies of Atkins (JAMA and New England Journal of Medicine...big name journals) both showing very positive results, I suspect that most will be very supportive.

For information only, I went online and bought the Atkins CD. It is the 2002 edition. Someone was selling it for only $2.00. Sometimes I listen to it when I go to bed at night because I do not like to read in bed. It has all the chapters separated so if you had an ipod you could go back into each chapter to review it.
