  • When I went a-tweakin' the pounds came a-sneakin'

    pjade said something on Zarabelle's thread that I want to respond to. {{{Thank you, pjade}}}

Because I tend to be more long-winded than a filibustering senator with bad hair, I decided than rather than weigh down Zarabelle's thread, I wanted to talk about tweaking here.

Zarabelle! I'm in no way making an example of you, either. I think you're the bees knees!

And for anyone else, this isn't to say, "Hey! My experience and anecdotal evidence is more important than yours." It's just me doing what I do... well, aside from humming through my nose and whistling at the same time. Relating my own experiences for what they are.

They are free to be borrowed or sent to anywhere where some cold person needs some hot air.

Just a quick something I found out about me from tweakin'.

When I started this WOE a year ago seriously (or so I thought), instead of referring to Atkins 2002, I referred to a guy I knew who lost a lot of weight on "Atkins" and ate alllll the frankenfoods he felt like. (Now I know he was SO stinkin' off-kilter, especially calling what he did the Atkins Diet!) Nonetheless, I saw his results, I was jazzed, and started "Atkins" the VERY NEXT DAY!

So I started "Atkins". I ate ice cream bars, candy bars, you name it! So long as I stayed within my so-called "20" I was coolio. Afterall, they made the stuff now that they didn't make back in 1984 when I first became introduced to Atkins. It was meant for my lips!

    Nummer nummer!

I became one in my Zen with Blue Bunny ice cream bars! I was eating Pecan low-carb turtles by the bag. And don't even start with the low-carb Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, because I was a stockholder in those according to my pantry-broker.

My father was my first experience with Atkins, in 1984. He cheated every Friday and used the 1979 version of the Atkins DANDR. He ate BigMacs and fries every Friday, and then he would go 0-carb Saturday and Sunday and then hop back on plan Monday (which, again, old book, totally different system, for another time).

I had two men in my life now from whom I was borrowing bad habits. Both of them were tweakers!

So, seeing their results, I was a tweaker, and I cheated regularly, too (once a week- once a month, depending)!

So here I'm tweaking in two separate ways. I'm becoming one with the frankenfoods to help me kick my sugar cravings (o the irony), and I'm cheating regularly because I know I can jump back on plan with no problems whatsoever (um. yeah, cleo).

I'm not Cleochatra, Queen of DeNial for nuttin' honey!

In November I took a cheat day that cost me 3 weeks to get back on track. 3 weeks!

Because the 'poisons' were never able to fully leave my body, I was still taking the same ole 'drugs' though in lower portions, and my body reacted the same way as though I were low-cal dieting.

It was dieting all right... low-cal, high-fat and high-calorie dieting... which really isn't dieting at all! LOL! OMG I'm such a dork.

It was only when I came to ADBB in November of last year that I found out I wasn't supposed to eat that stuff (even though it's made for low-carbers), and was told I wasn't supposed to follow the 1979 version of DANDR! Adding to that, cheating is OUT!

    OUT? Waitaminute!

I was stinkin' sure I was doing it right. So sure, in fact that for a month I fought with 2big over this WOE. FINALLY I figured out through research, 2big lovingly smacking me repeatedly upside the head, and reading the 2002 version (I researched every version I could get my mitts on), Dr Atkins' newest version was right (science changes with time and the old version of DANDR is actually dangerous by today's standards). Not only was Dr A's newest book right, but I was wrong about everything I was taught to me by well-meaning people who thought they knew Atkins.

Well, gentlemen who taught me wrong things! I now know Atkins, and you are no Atkins! (hee hee! I've always wanted to say that)

I look at all the time and opportunities I have lost because of my tweakin'.

I look at the fashions I've missed, the opportunities I let pass me by because I'm too ashamed to try to make friends because I feel so ugly, and I look at what my children have missed because of a mother who's winded playing croquet!

I am going to have a cheat-free period until New Year's Eve (small steps), and I challenge anyone else who's willing to go cheat-free with me until New Year's Eve.

It will be stinkin' hard, especially because we're headed towards the holidays, but I'm done screwing around! I'm not going to be the person who sits in my easy chair crying on December 31st because I coulda/shouyld/woulda.

Instead of waiting for January 1st, I'm done waiting.
Life's not waiting for me. It's passing me by!

Following Atkins since 1983 and only starting to show real results in 2005.

Because I tweaked. Because I followed false Atkins prophets/profits. Because I didn't believe enough in this WOE to do it the right way from the beginning.

    22 years!

I made the mistakes for you.

Don't go making them for yourselves!

Re: When I went a-tweakin' the pounds came a-sneakin'

{{{Cleo}}} Loved your post! I too did Atkins the first time by only eating 20 carbs a day, tweaking it as you would say. Yes, I did lose weight for a while and it came off quite easily. Now, I am finding out that I must leave out the tweaking to really lose weight.

I also know a guy here at work that lost all his weight tweaking this WOE. (disgusting) He still does and eats apple fritters almost every morning! He is a scale junkie so if he puts on even one pound, he cuts out the apple fritters, McDonalds and so on. Then he does strict induction. I know this would not work for me! I doubt I could live like that anyway. I know I would go overboard and it would be hard for me to start all over again.

No, I know I must continue on with this WOE. It works for me and I have great support here when I need it.

Cleo, I would join you in your efforts of not tweaking but I am not sure I could make it through the holidays. WOW girl, you have really changed your WOL! I wish I had your strength. I still plan on trying my best though. So far, so good!!!!

        greeneyed! 4 days! GO YOU!

You know, my son's birthday is this weekend and I was thinking, just this morning, about how I'm only going to walk in there (like the good Atkineer I am) and have only the mud pie!

Um, cleo. This is your brain talking. You know. The lobe which functions from time to time...

And it hit me! I'm doing it again!

So I'm serious. I need to stick with it. My menality is about about making me eat that mud pie, even when my common sense is all hellooooooooo braintrust! Mud pie is not on this WOE!

pjade! Thank you for really making me think about this whole problem I have. Aren't men the worst?! LOL! They have metabolisms of the gods! I believe you will make it through the holidays! I really do!

We just have to start--today--planning our menus and strategies. It's when I always think, "I'll plan later" that later sneaks up and delivers a wet willie of doom on me!

Ho Hum - no tweaken then ((SULK)) Only joking! You can hardly buy any low carb things here anyway - it's not easy to shop low carb here - costs a fortune.

When you say NO CHEATS - do you mean you would make the legal pancakes from the list and then eat them dry (or with butter and lemon) or would you use no carb syrup? Just checking the boundaries my friend! x

Can I just clarify - when I said tweak, I did not mean eat potatos, mcdonalds, apple fritters etc. I meant have the odd carb free syrup or dressing or carbsense pancake. I'm not that much of a tweaker. Anyways, my tweaking is over before it has started so your goal is reached with me Cleo. I will save the products that I've just bought (at a hugely inflated price) until I am on Maintenance. xx

Zarabelle-- Hey hey hey! I'm glad it's hard to buy the stuff! I wish it was harder when I started! *lol*

I mean no cheats! No syrup until the proper rung (be it in OWL or modified OWL). You could try flavoring butter with a smidge of splenda and trying that when you hit that rung!

Trust me. As a macadamia nut addict, I can't even partake in a nut until the nut rung. That's going to be a toughie! *munching on a piece of celery instead*

Okey Dokey. Well, I just won't make any pancakes then! Buckweat costs £10 a small bag here anyway.

Are you staying on Induction until the new year or going up the ladder?

{{{Zarabelle}}}-- I'm going to do the 2-week induction, and then I'll move into 'extended induction', where I start climbing the OWL rungs, but remain at about 20 grams of net carbs per day.

woohoo {{{wannabe}}}! I know you can, you smileycutie! This will help our other challenge, too! This is us, with no excuses! It's hard now, but in 3 months we'll be all, "OMG! I'm so glad I did this!"

Yikes! Is it really 3 months? I have to lose 48 lbs in 3 months?

Ok, I can do this...and with the no cheating rule that should help right? Plus I'm doing a 1005 minutes of exercise for Sept. challenge.

Ohhh, didn't know about extended induction... I am in for that too. That way, I will get more variety without cheating but still stay really low on the carbs. Love it. I'm gonna do the same. Thanks for the tip.

wannabe-- actually, it's four months (sorry)... starting today, girl, and that clock's ticking! I hear it. *lol*

Zarabelle-- if you don't have a copy of the 2002 version of the DANDR, please go to amazon.com and pick up a used copy (I paid less than a dollar for mine). It is a lifesaver! REALLY and TRULY. It goes in depth regarding extended induction. It is important to read those chapters!

I have it, I just haven't got to Extended Induction going up the OWL ladder yet! I will read it tonight. I picked up my copy when I went to Las Vegas as the UK version is inaccurate (food quantities).

I have to go and cook dinner now and tidy the house before DH comes home and finds I've been online for tooooo long!
